NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Some of us have grown older and don't have the time to post as we once did. And there doesn't seem to be "new recruits" coming aboard from NMU to replace our posts.

I also hope that the chatter picks up a bit. It's good to hear from and keep in touch with Wildcat fans.

I am shy and bring nothing to the table.... ummm yeah, go Cats.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

*bangs head against laptop*

I'll be so happy to never have the 'Cats play another game in the state of Ohio. Ever again.

Oh, right, we still have to deal with BGSU.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Watched the game online, what a horrible call on the blow to the head on Thurber. This team is not very deep to begin with and to lose Thurber 54 seconds into the game was a blow the cats could not recover from.

It was a bull sh#$ call. I like Walt Kyle's reaction after the game.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

I will again reference what I posted earlier in the week. We are killing ourselves with these penalties.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Wat hing the OSU webstream and these announcers are awful. They are making obvious, John Maddenesque, statements. Also, they have refered to NMU as Western and Michigan State. One time they both kept calling then Michigan state for about 20 seconds straight.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Disappointing weekend!

We are killing ourselves with...penalties.

...even if there were some bull sh#$ calls.

Penalties in minutes on the weekend for NMU 52, for OSU 29.

And, I don't care what the "quality shots" camp has to say: the 'Cats were out shot 34 to 77 this weekend--14 to 42 tonight.

Shoot the PuckShoot the PuckShoot the PuckShoot the PuckShoot the PuckShoot the PuckShoot the PuckShoot the Puck.

I didn't think we'd score many goals this year, but with the defensive core that returned I thought we'd be solid on defense--NMU is near the bottom in team defense, just ahead of last place Michigan.

And, we are at the bottom of the CCHA after 8 games with only one win and 5 points.

I hope things turn around sooner rather than later.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Terrible call on Thurber.....you hate to see such a series tilting call made in a questionable circumstance. Not saying NMU would have swept, but I think it had a major impact.

I agree. However, the game NMU brought this weekend was certainly not their best. Hopefully this was an eye opening weekend for the boys and they come back strong. They have to be angry and, as history shows, they play well angry.

When 4 of your top 9 forwards are out (5 after Higby got tossed on Saturday), your chances of success decrease exponentially.

I can understand the offensive let down. What I'm having problems with this year is the defensive break down.

NMU returned all of it's defensive core including the goaltender and I figured we'd be strong in our zone. I realize that Coreau has been out on the ice a lot so far this season, but he is not having a very good year at this point if you look at his numbers to date: CCHA Conference Goaltending Leaders - 2012-13. Especially compared to Motte at FSU or Williams at Miami who have logged as many minutes as Coreau. I don't put the blame entirely at Coreau's feet, but his defensemen certainly must not be getting the job done.

Some of you have seen many more games than I have this year, and when I do watch it's online so it's difficult to tell, but does something need to happen defensively if NMU is going to rebound the rest of the season?

I would say that's a very fair assesment.

I'm thinking not quite defensively, but proactively. NMU needs to leave for the WCHA asap. We're currently undefeated against future WCHA foes. ;)

3-2-1 Against the B1G
1-2-1 Against the NCHC
0-2-0 Against Hockey East
0-0-0 Against the WCHA

I'm here just about every day. I just don't have a lot of intelligent things to add.:)

Article from the Mining Journal about Penalties and the Penalty Kill hurting the team.
http://www.miningjournal.net/page/c...e-Northern-Michigan-hockey-team.html?nav=5010

I agree with Matt Wellens on a lot of things, but the problem is just the Penalty Kill. Would less penalties help? Sure, but let's fix the real problem: the PK.

From College Hockey Stats.net:
Penalty Minute Leaders (Nationally)
11. Ohio State - 153 PIM - 15.3 PIM/Game
12. Miami - 180 PIM - 15.0 PIM/Game
14. Ferris State - 178 PIM - 14.8 PIM/Game
14. Michigan State - 178 PIM - 14.8 PIM/Game
18. Northern Michigan - 176 PIM - 14.7 PIM/Game
27. Alaska - 161 PIM - 13.4 PIM/Game
29. Michigan - 157 PIM - 13.1 PIM/Game
35. Notre Dame - 135 PIM - 12.3 PIM/Game
44. Bowling Green - 160 PIM - 11.4 PIM/Game
50. Lake Superior - 133 PIM - 11.1 PIM/Game
53. Western Michigan - 108 PIM - 10.8 PIM/Game

We're mid-pack in penalties per game. Funny thing, Miami is 12th nationally for PIM, yet they lead the CCHA. Ohio State, leads CCHA teams in penalty minutes, and they're 5th in the CCHA.

Now, let's look at the PK:
Penalty Kill (Nationally)
05. Notre Dame - 40/ 44 - 90.9%
14. Alaska - 47/ 54 - 87.0%
15. Michigan State - 46/ 53 - 86.8%
17. Miami - 50/ 58 - 86.2%
23. Ferris State - 51/ 60 - 85.0%
29. Michigan - 38/ 46 - 82.6%
29. Ohio State - 38/ 46 - 82.6%
33. Western Michigan - 37/ 45 - 82.2%
44. Lake Superior - 40/ 50 - 80.0%
55. Bowling Green - 46/ 61 - 75.4%
57. Northern Michigan - 38/ 51 - 74.5%

Embarassing. Every 4th Penalty Kill results in a goal. Dividing 14.7 by 2 Minutes (average penalty length) means that every game we're giving up almost two "free" goals to the opponent per game.

For comparison, Miami: 15/2=7.5*(1/8)= One PK goal per game.
Alaska: 13.4/2=6.7*(1/8) = One PK goal per game.
Michigan State: 14.8/2=7.4*(1/8)= One PK goal per game.
Ohio State: 15.3/2=7.65*(2/11)= One PK goal every game and a half.
Western Michigan: 10.8/2=5.4*(1/5) = One PK goal every game.

Taking penalties isn't the problem. Our miserable PK is the problem.

So, last year they ended the 2011-2012 season at 85.9%, which is pretty good and ranked 5th in the nation.

This year, I guess, they must definitely miss Florek and Cherniwchan on the PK.

What I don't understand is that, as I've mentioned before, with the defensive core essentially the same as last year (all of whom where part of the good PK last year) where is the breakdown happening with those guys? Are our forwards and defenseman just not in-sync with each other? We're still pretty bad in PIM, are they just getting tired of trying to kill penalties?

We ranked 7th in the nation in PIM in 2011-12.
7. Northern Michigan 37 Games 606 PIM 16.4 PIM/Game
Like you said, we ranked 5th in the Nation on the PK last season. Even with the excess in PIM.
Our combined special teams lead the nation. This season the combined special teams are 43rd in the nation.

To answer your questions, I don't know. The youth on the team may be nervous. I haven't been able to witness a game, but from the limited highlights I've seen on CCHA.com, there is more "running around" instead of set-up plays.

That's the only thing I can think of.

Re: NMU Hockey 2012-2013 Season Thread

Not the prettiest of wins but a win. I feel like NMU needs to work on getting the puck to the net big time. They need to be putting up twice the shots on goal they are currently.

Any idea on the mystery suspension Walt imposed?
