NMU 2009-2010 Season

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

If you are questioning the athletic department's commitment, you are way off base. Remember the backing they gave Tuomas Tarkki a few years ago. How do you know that they haven't been pushing Olver's candidacy?

Psssssssttttt... A LOT of the promoting of Tarkki during his Hobey run was done by me. :p The only thing the Athletic Department did was Godfrey told me to ask Cheryl for permission to hang the banner on the side of the Zamboni.

There was a steep drop off in promotions the following year with Oystrick's Hobey run because I felt that he wasn't having a Hobey Baker type season. Mojo even gave me hell for supporting Tarkki and not Oystie.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

We all realize that DaveyD has to censor his words carefully and he is no longer a critic of NMU on the second go round. So be it, but cheerleading and disecting every post on this message board by someone he disagrees with has been a little over the top and not very becoming.

That said, the folks in the athletic department probably don't even know what the Hobey Baker is!!!

While it is wonderful what this team has once again done in the second half the job is not yet over. Speaking with the players they know this and I truely believe they are focused on a greater result than years past and that has me excited.

Olver as a 1st team all conference pre-season selection hasn't snuck up on anybody in the know and he has delivered all season long. While he may not turns heads nationally at this point he should take home CCHA POY!!!

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

Good on ya NMU getting that last bye. Had a pretty good run the last 10 games there. And glad that you don't get to come to the Goggin again and knock us out.

I want to say congrats to NMU too, I for one never doubted that they wouldn't turn it around. Im also glad that all they "haters" and "doubters"have subsided. I echo jd's setiments on not having to see NMU back in oxford come march and hope to see you guys in Detroit!

Oh and to the person who left me Neg Rep on the Billy-Picdiva thing...

No-Im not taking any sides. I dont want to listen to the both of you go back and forth and read through all the posts that are useless to NMU Hockey. Create a woofing thread if you care to continue this.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

From now on I am only going to comment on hockey, the hatch is buried.

As far as the Oystrick thing goes, I'm thrilled. I hope he can find a place on that squad. I'm in LA/Burbank/Anaheim twice a month, so I may actually get to see the guy play! Whoo Hoo!!! Oystie is my all-time favorite NMU hockey player, so I just want him to do well in the NHL, no matter what team.

Edit: Looks like he'll be staying with the Wolves though.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

I've seen nothing on NMU's website regarding the fantastic season he's having, nothing in The Mining Journal, nothing in any NMU publication, nothing in the Alumni Newsletter.

If NMU's athletic department was making a concerted effort for this kid then we'd know about it. It can't just be something that you know about Dave, it should be a lot more highly publicized. We can't expect people to vote for a kid from NMU if they are only looking at stat sheets.

I see nothing wrong with questioning the Athletic Department. Why do you get so offended?

As for the comment directed at that "nice lady", she is the one that has started it with me several times recently, without anything being directed at her. She has made comments regarding my wife that were just as ridiculous and she left me neg rep saying that she wished my wife and kids were killed. I liked it better when she had me on ignore, this forum was a lot more fun. So with that being said, if she's going to act like a ****, I'm going to call her one.

The coaches make the nominations. Those coaches aren't reading the Mining Journal, the North Wind or the alumni newsletter. They are basing their selections on what they have seen. The media plays no part in the nomination process. NMU does not have the PR machine to do what Alabama (ROLL TIDE!) did for Mark Ingram. Like I said, remember the push that was put on for Tarkki 4 years ago. They were behind him incredibly.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

Billy, he has a broken jaw and is out for another four weeks at least.

DavyD, this is one time I gotta adamantly disagree with you. The University only started including the Vote for Hobey once the students overwhelmingly did the work. I know, because I was behind that one.

In all honesty, the campaign needed to start around Christmas with a website and/or a push to get him included. I think some students pushed for Wisconsin's McBain a year or two ago. There is too much on the plate of the already spread thin athletic department office to take time to create a buzz for a 1% fan vote.

The puckheads/catpack/students/alumni all dropped the ball on this one.

And a big tip of the hat goes to those who got the ball rolling in support of Tarkki. Hopefully the same support can be generated this time around. I would place a pretty strong wager that Mark will be on the list of 10 when it comes out.

I am not trying to butt in or anything, but a couple of points were brought up that made me want to chime in.
Media coverage for Wildcat hockey sucks. Try to find an article on the Friday night game on Saturday morning. Other than a blurb on CCHA.com, can't find one.
Everytime I watch a NMU game on B2, I am amazed at how many empty seats I see. Back in my student days, (middle 80's at Lakeview), I felt the student and local support was marginal, at best. We had a few years in there where the team was pretty low in the WCHA, there would be some empty seats, but nothing like I see now, not to mention the team is good now.
I remember a professor once said that NMU hockey funds all the non-revenue sports. I can see that the athletic department must struggle with the attendance I see hockey games.

Usually there is an article posted on the Marquette Mining Journal Website (www.miningjournal.net) by around 10 or 10:30 am the next morning. You may have to make a few clicks to find it, but it usually it is there. The NMU website (www.nmu.edu/athletics) usually has a release as well and the TV6 Site (www.uppermichiganssource.com) often has highlights posted too.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

Here is some GREAT press for Mark Olver courtesy of The Hockey News:

Another from College Hockey News:

Lastly:
http://nhl.fanhouse.com/2010/02/16/hi-my-name-is-mark-olver/

For obvious reasons we are all excited about the season Mark is having and apparently others have noticed as well. His national recognition will come and a strong push in both the CCHA and NCAA tourney will provide him and many of his teammates with additional boosts in stature.

This is a very exciting time for NMU hockey. It has been a couple of years since they went knocking on the door of contender...how about we see them KICK IT IN!!! GO CATS GO!!!

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

Well the regular season has finally come and gone. By the way, Davy nice prediction a few pages back, 4th place!!! I'm totally excited and happy for the team. This past weekend was awesome, lower penalties/games, Olver's outstanding play, etc. Now all we need is UNO to win and move on to the second round so we can be 3rd seed moving onto the Joe. Hopefully we can move onto the championship game to receive a NCCA bid if a lower seed can knock of MSU or Ferris. I do not think we can take on Miami if it comes to 1 vs. 4 at the Joe, but who knows, eh? Great job Cats, I would have never thought we'd be in this position. After the end of the season, does Olver, Hanson and the other Swed leave the NMU program?

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

This was a very good finish for the Cats... I can't help but feel like we've been here before though... This season feels a lot like the 05-06 finish...

That year, we ended the regular season just outside the NCAA bubble and had a bye in the CCHA Playoffs... We had several seniors leaving at the end of the year (Oystie was the main guy), so there was a sense that "if things were gonna happen, it would have to be that year" though.....

Unfortunately there are no players from that season left... I think a little experience being in that position would be a big benefit... On the other hand, I have to believe that the vets on this team have to have a chip on their shoulder about playing in the late game on Saturday night... No more Walt Kyle Invitational games...

That being said, worry about that down the road... The Cats need to worry about the business at hand... No matter what happens, they'll have a very dangerous team coming up to Marquette in 10 days... Don't think about the NCAAs or the Joe... Just worry about U of M, Alaska, or whomever comes calling... This team is playoff tested, so I don't believe that they will overlook anyone... They do have a track record of going 3 games though, and that can be troublesome... We'll just have to see what happens...

All in all, enjoy your weekend off boys.... Just be ready to work hard for the remainder of this week, and come back to the office on Monday...

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

And if I saw the blurb on the ccha right, Mark Olver also captured the ccha scoring title, last accomplished by Jeff Pyle in 81.
