Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

I'll bring some life into this here thread!!!!

WALT KYLE SUCKS! HE WILL NEVER BE HALF THE MAN THAT DOM DELUISE WAS AND HE CAN'T MAKE HALF AS GOOD A LASAGNA*

I DON'T CARE HOW GOOD NMU HAS BEEN THE LAST TWO SERIES, THIS TEAM IS STILL MEDIOCRE AND CAN NOT COMPETE WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT WITH THE DENVERS, WISCONSINS, MICHIGAN STATES, and MICHIGANS OF THE NCAA. THIS TEAM DOESN'T HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AND THAT IS IT.

* This is pure conjecture. I have never had lasagna made by either Walt Kyle or Dom DeLuise in my life. I just imagine that Dom DeLuise makes a **** fine lasagna.

Just wanted to make sure you were aware that UMich is 5-7 (after stopping a 5 game losing streak by splitting with Bowling Green for crying out loud), and is not ranked for the first time in 12 years (or do you not actually follow college hockey, and were not aware of this info?). If that's the kind of mediocracy you're shooting for? Um, yea!

Ok BWK, I'll bite. What needs to be done to make this program a contender? Is it a bigger recruiting budget like the Notre Dames, Michigans, MSUs, Miamis and Ohio States have? Not gonna happen moron.

After all the aforementioned teams and the top teams from the other conferences raid the talent pool, you're left with the rest of the middle of the road teams fighting over middle of the road talent. Every once in awhile a coach will end up with a rough diamond that can be polished, but it only happens once every few years. Walt's doing what he can with the talent he has. NMU isn't going to be a contender for the Mason Cup most years. 18 out of 20 years, they'll miss out on the NCAA tournament. They're good enough to knock off a great team once or twice a season, but mediocre enough to lose games they most definitely should win. The Wildcats will probably never win another NCAA tournament. They do have 1 trophy, and that's more than a lot of schools can say. The sooner you come to terms with that, the more happy you, and then rest of the posters that have to read the the garbage you post, will be. Go ahead and put me in the Hall of Shame for accepting mediocrity. It'll be an honor.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

According to USCHO, NMU currently holds the #1 position in strength of schedule.

#2 is Tech, so a sweep of them upcoming would be pretty nice.

Looking ahead, the schedule doesnt ease up with Alaska, MSU, Rivals LSSU and Tech and possibly a showdown with Minnesota in the new year (who has the #3 SOS).

OK genius, show us how NMU can compete for talent with the big budget big time schools. We don't have the resources or the reputations that those schools do. We're not playing in a world where all things are equal. We are to the CCHA what South Carolina is to the SEC. Or maybe Mississippi State. Do you think Steve Spurrier is a worse coach at SC than he was at Florida, or is he just not able to attract the talent that he could at Florida? Was Lou Holtz any different of a coach at SC than he was at Notre Dame? Is Brian Kelly that much better of a coach at Cincinnati than he was at Central? If not, then why didn't Central make the BCS? Get a grip on reality. If we had spent the last 7 years playing in College Hockey America, I guarantee we'd have had a few trips to the tourney. We are a Division II school with a Division II budget that competes with Division I-A schools in hockey. Simply putting a different coach in isn't going to level the playing field.

Please, let's see how hockey smart you are. How can NMU level the playing field so it CAN be right up there with schools that have 2-3 times the budget, and 10 times the prestige. Oh you have to do it with a smaller budget next year than you get this year, because drops in state aid will certainly result in budget cuts across the board.

Davy, My post was very tongue in cheek. I was trying to add some excitement to the thread. Honestly, I think that Walt has done a good job with the team this year and have next to no major complaints thus far. I still wish the team was more aggressive on the power play and the occasional lack of execution on passes on the power play concern me. I'm hoping the team can come up with a sweep this weekend and move up into the top tier of the CCHA.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

Couple updates; both courtesy of our fine rival Michigan Tech.

First, NMU has received a commitment from Chad Pietila's brother Blake to attend NMU in the 2011-12 season. Blake currently plays for the USNTDP-U17 team; quite a coup by NMU to snag him away from Red Berenson and UofM.
(Per Heisenberg's recruiting site)

Second, former NMU goaltender Dieter Kochan, who traded in his hockey uniform for a Michigan State Police uniform last December, has been hired by Michigan Tech to be their goaltending coach.

Also joining the program is Dieter Kochan, who will serve as a goaltenders coach. The four-year letterwinner at Northern Michigan (1993-97) and Saskatoon, Sask., native had a 10-year professional career, including stints with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Minnesota Wild. He is now a Michigan State Police trooper.

No word yet if MTU has offered Craig Kowalski a coaching contract to help spark their offense.

I met Dieter this summer at the hockey camp. He's a great guy, and I wish him the best up there.

And it seems the NMU tradition of "keeping it in the family" lives on! :)

Speaking of Brian Kelly and Notre Dame, will Brian be any better at Notre dame then at Cincinnati?

But this is not a college football thread, so that enough of that. I've been away from the forums for awhile, but I listen to every game online and still cheer on the cats. I recently was shuned by the sports department at the tv station I work at when I wore my NMU jersey when the Cats were in town to play Notre Dame.

Re: NMU 2009-2010 Season

From the PtC thread, but I thought it would be better discussed here.

If anyone's taking Kaunisto, you may want to reconsider. He's been suspended by the CCHA for Friday's game.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN player suspended for ONE game

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – The Central Collegiate Hockey Association today announced that senior forward Ray Kaunisto of Northern Michigan University has been suspended for one game as the result of an incident that occurred in a game at Lake Superior State on Dec. 11.

The supplemental disciplinary action was taken by the CCHA after a review of the incident that occurred near the 13:40 mark of the third period. The league deemed the incident to be a blindside hit to the head/neck area of a Lake Superior State player.

Kaunisto will be required to serve this suspension during Northern Michigan’s next game, Dec. 18, against Michigan Tech. He is eligible to return to the lineup on Jan. 2.

-CCHA-

Looking back on the box score from that game, there wasn't even a penalty called initially on whatever hit that was at all. There were no penalties at or near the 13:40 mark of the 3rd period in that game. I wonder why they would go back and suspend him now instead of looking at it, say, after the game on Friday night and suspending him for Saturday's game? That just doesn't make any sense to me at all.

My guess is Roque & Co. submitted video to the league but not soon enough for the CCHA to act on it before Saturday's game.
