The basis was restricting magazine semi-autos, 9mm being the police standard caliber, six rounds being a standard revolver size. Like I said, it's a starting point.

You said certain things NEED to be done, then you backtracked and said it was "just a starting point".

How does someone owning 3 pistols make them more of a danger to society than someone with 1?

Limits and control of access NEED to done. Banning of semi-automatic and automatic weapons NEEDS to be done. There is no legitimate civilian use for them. Now, I do concede there is a legitimate civilian use for semi-automatic pistols but where that limit is is up for debate and is what I'm talking about.

I did backtrack on a few things because other people brought up legitimate points (F2B&G especially). I will concede, I don't know where the reasonable restriction on semi-automatic pistols is, but I gave, in my mind, what a logical starting point is. If you want to give one or give a reason why there shouldn't be one, I'm all ears.

My favorite part is thr claim that semi autos don't have any place in hunting. Lol. I don't hunt but everyone I talk to that does says the same thing. If you happen to miss, you want to be able to fire again quickly to out the animal down.

So we should allow what are basically slightly modified military weapons because "oh crap I missed!"?

Well, there are semi-automatic shotguns, and yes those do have a valid hunting purpose. Particularly useful for upland birds.

There's a lot of irrational fear of scary-looking guns from people that don't have the first clue about where food actually comes from. It's pointless to try to explain it. The best thing to do is just stock up on all the guns & ammo you can get in case they ever try to force the issue through the feds. (kidding)

That's one of the big ones I hear about. But I have no issues with semiautomatic rifles either. And no hunter is going into the woods without a semiautomatic rifle or sidearm that has some stopping power. Especially if you're going bear hunting. Happened to my uncle. Probably saved his life.

There is no necessity for semi-automatic rifles in hunting or any civilian use. A bolt action rifle and a sidearm with stopping power are enough.

seriously though, you must realize that's a judgment call right? There are others who would say that since there's no strict "necessity" for non-farmers to own a 1/2 ton pickup, we should take them away from the city-dwellers and make laws to outlaw such a tragic waste of carbon. And once we're at it, are samurai swords really "necessary" for anyone? How about 5-bedroom houses? Should we outlaw everything that some knucklehead decides isn't "necessary"? What a ****ty world to live in.

When I used to deer hunt, I carried a Winchester .270 bolt action, and even that was probably overkill for whitetails at less than 100 yards - a lever-action .223 or .30-30 would've done just fine. It depends not only what game you're hunting, but how you're hunting it (sitting in a blind vs. chasing, short yardage vs. long, woods vs. plains, etc.), and what region you're in. IIRC, you typically hunt bears with cartridges in the .400s. Talk about recoil.

1/2 ton pickups actually have civilian uses including towing, transportation of cargo, and work uses. Samurai swords are in the same boat as semi-automatic rifles, they have zero civilian uses outside of museum uses. 5 bedroom houses do have uses including housing for large families and boarding uses.

The last two also cannot kill a large number of people in a short amount of time. 1/2 ton pickups can but we require mandatory training and licensing to use them. Also, they have legitimate civilian uses beyond "oops I missed" and "they look cool".

I've often thought that the best way to promote gun safety is to teach all children gun safety principles starting from an early age.

Your point about cars is a good parallel: where I grew up, drivers' education was a standard part of the secondary school curriculum.

It makes a lot of practical sense to have hands'-on gun safety training starting in elementary school. The sooner people learn how to use guns with proper respect, the better for us all. Waiting until people are adolescents is not a good idea, hormones make all adolescents partially crazy at times.

The world is full of dangerous, evil people. A populace well-trained in gun safety and gun basics is a good vaccination against some of the dangers we face.

I've seen a few searches that indicate that far more mass shootings have been prevented by citizens with legal guns than the shootings that do take place, it's just that they don't get widespread media attention.

In your opinion, which you are apparently anxious to make the law of the land, notwithstanding the Constitution.
