Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Are we gonna have real gun control now? No? Just another school shooting and move on?

When Gun Control has a lobby as large and effective as the NRA we will start seeing real gun control. We get the government we pay for.

We could sit here and complain that the NRA has too much money/influence/etc. and is wholly unreasonable in their "zero compromise" stance (both of which I would agree with), but I'm curious to know what would constitute "real" gun control from your point of view?

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I was agreeing with you, and it was obvious. You're a fool.

And here I was taking you at your word about putting me on "Ignore." I wish you would. Then I'd be relieved of wondering what the h*ll you're talking about when (once again) you forgo clarity for style points.

I have zero use for the NRA. Wayne LaPierre lost me forever when he referred to the ATF agents murdered at Waco as "Jack booted government thugs." The hysterical ranting about protecting citizens from government takeover is amusing and it's pointless to argue against it. In fact, I'm old enough to remember when the NRA was primarily interested in fathers passing along the joys of hunting to their sons.

When one of these horrific school shootings occurs, the usual suspects dust off their customary anti-gun proposals. That's to be expected, I suppose. But they never quite explain how these very general responses would have impacted the specific situation. And they never explain what they propose to do about the 150 million (or more) guns that are already out there. The Supreme Court has ruled that the 2nd Amendment means Americans are generally allowed to own firearms. Virtually everything that boy did last week was already against the law. What new law, pray tell, would have deterred him from attempting a mass murder and then killing himself?

I'm not a gun person. And got along quite well, thank you, during my time in Japan (which has unbelievably tough gun laws). If we could get into the Way Back machine and eliminate all memory of our history with firearms I wouldn't lose any sleep. But we can't.

The kid was clearly a basket case and anyone who read his Twitter account should have realized it. They should have confronted him or done something about it.

Maybe they had since he attempted to kill relatives.

Either way, this kid was all sorts of ****ed up.

It seems so. The problem is identifying the truly screwed up kids from the ones who are merely blowing off steam before they start pulling the trigger. Remember, again, the multiple efforts at Virginia Tech to get Wu Tang Klan 86ed. Recall Nikki Giovanni, who gave that stirring "we are Virginia Tech" speech. She had told school officials either that kid goes or I go. She refused to have him in any of her classes. And many students felt the same way. The chairman of the English department, was tutoring him, since nobody wanted to have anything to do with him. He'd been referred to campus health. And yet. . . Over and over again we seem to shrink from taking the final step that would protect us from these people.

The wild thing about this is even the nutters at the NRA don't want to be zero compromise, for fear that eventually they'll lose all credibility. But they are being pushed by their own competing forces. Believe it or not, a decade ago the NRA was getting heat from some of their more mentally challenged members that they were too SOFT.

The gun manufacturers will only compromise when we force them to. They're just like the cancer stick folks. And when they are forced to, they will, because it's still an insanely lucrative market with an enormous bunch of captive suckers. There are guys at my work who are having trouble making their house payments who own 20 guns, and talk about nothing else during the week than buying more. The NRA is leeching off an identity market that is about as sophisticated (and as total) as tweens screaming for Bieber.

And you have a solution for these free Americans freely deciding how to spend their money, I'll bet.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I used to have a pretty nice plant, I think it was called angel hair fern or something, but it died. Thinking of getting a rabbits foot variety.

Also, looking forward to bringing my son rifle shopping later this week ahead of deer hunting season. Should be a blast. Get it? Blast? Also planning to stock up on ammo. yessir.

1. Ban all automatic and semi-automatic weapons with an exception to semi-auto pistols 9mm caliber and under and limit to ~6 round clips.
2. Rifles and shotguns must be limited to a size that prohibits concealment.
3. All owners must submit to full background check, undergo mandatory written and practical testing, and carry a photo ID card with owned weapons listed. Must be renewed every 5 years.
4. Each person limited to owning 1 pistol, 1 shotgun, and 2 rifles.
5. All weapons mist be stored with a trigger lock and in a locked safe.
6. Any violation is a felony and carries a minimum five year sentence.
7. 6 month buyback period for all illegal weapons, an additional 6 month amnesty period.
8. Allow for gun ranges and similar businesses to have and allow to people use certain semi-auto and automatic weapons for sport use but under tight restriction.

Basically, gets rid of the weapons that aren't needed for personal use (if you need a semi-auto AR-15 to hunt, you don't need to hunt), forces people to register and be trained (like we do with cars), forces people to keep good track of their weapons, and stops people from owning arsenals.

How in the hell is Jodi Ernst going to get her 2nd Amendment remedies when the time comes with those restrictions??

What's so scarier about the AR-15 when compared to other semi-automatic rifles on the market today? Is it based upon the aggressive look, because it's not a traditional hunting look to it? The caliber of bullet is smaller than many rifles, using a .223 ammo. Being hit by a bullet from an AR-15 is less likely to kill you than a "standard" bullet from a 30-06.

That seems to be a good argument to expand the ban to all semi-autos.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I consider myself to be fairly rational on the gun debate, and banning of all semiautomatics is a complete nonstarter in my eye. I have no issues with the current automatic regulations we have in place. I have no issue with mandatory background checks and waiting periods and getting rid of the gun show loophole. I also have no issue with banning magazines with capacities in excess of 15.

I vehemently disagree with any limits on number of guns. I don't agree with registration on everyone's driver's license. I don't agree with the ban on anything over 9mm. I disagree with the requirement that weapons are locked at all times, with some exceptions.

It's like banning cars with spoilers.

Lawyer: [reading from Walt's will] And I'd like to leave my 1972 Gran Torino to...

[the lawyer pauses and looks up at Ashley, who smiles expectantly]

Lawyer: ...my friend... Thao Vang Lor. On the condition that you don't chop-top the roof like one of those beaners, don't paint any idiotic flames on it like some white trash hillbilly, and don't put a big, gay spoiler on the rear end like you see on all the other zipperheads' cars. It just looks like hell. If you can refrain from doing any of that... it's yours.

And what of the tens of millions of fire arms already out there that exceed your criteria? And violations of your amnesty/buyback provisions? Do we send ATF or other law enforcement types out going door to door to confiscate them? Probable cause?

There is no gun show loophole. Dealers at gun shows are required to do the same paperwork they do at a store.
