Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I hope so, but the same argument could have been made about over-the-air transmission. "You don't like it, turn your set off." Brains switch off when the usual start wailing WONTSOMEONETHINKOFTHECHOLDREN???!!!

SCOTUS has a pretty strong track record protecting freedom of speech across the political spectrum of its appointees:

Reno v. American Civil Liberties Union - striking down an Internet "decency" regulation
Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association - striking down violent video game criminalization
Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District - protect student expression in schools (admittedly since limited to some extent)
United States, et al. v. Playboy Entertainment Group, Inc. - cannot restrict sexually explicit cable channels to late night hours only

As I said, I hope so. This is one of those times I'm more worried about Wise Latina than Discount Aquinas.

The first person to think of the children should be their parents, who should stop being lazy and actively manage their children's media content. That's what programmable parental controls on TV sets are for.

Anytime I hear/see that last phrase, I check my wallet.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Some of these cable shows are really pushing the envelope when it comes to language, sex, and violence (I don't mind, btw) and I bet in a couple years enough people will be pushing for regulation, subscription based or not.

That's true of some network shows, going way back to Dennis Franz & Sharon Lawrence in the shower on NYPD Blue.

The Communications Act of 1934 created the FCC to regulate the "scarce natural resource" of radio frequencies. TV came along and the same rationale applied. That's the basis for regulation and is clearly no longer the case. I wouldn't expect any effort by the commission to regulate the content of subscription services. Even though you've expressed yourself as supportive of street thug like efforts to shut people up with whom you disagree, I'd imagine we'd wind up on the same side should the Commission decide it wants to be the national censor.

I was working in Omaha when the local ABC affiliate gave Bochco exactly what he wanted by refusing to air the first two episodes of "Blue." A listener sent me a tape of those episodes in which Franz and Lawrence were at loggerheads. Sippowitz was still drinking and in one memorable scene told her to "Ipsa this, you prissy little b*tch." (complete with crotch grab). I knew I had a new favorite show. Later, that same station allowed those first two episodes to air during reruns, which I assure you did not go unmentioned by me. Evidently the popularity of the show outweighed their "responsibility" to protect people from rough language. . .or something.

It's like when a TV station plays Blazing Saddles and they blank out the n-word. The whole point is portraying the initial racism of the characters as small-minded.

Or when Sonny says he doesn't want Michael coming out of that men's room with "just a stick in his hands." Yeah, he said "stick," for sure.

Students singing a religious song is "street thug like efforts." You really are a piece of work.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Hahahahaha. Without the slightest hint of irony he still argues that Kepler supports denying free speech. Even though the students were merely exercising their's and just happened to be louder because there were more people.

Yeah - can't imagine what OP's point is with this (not that he ever needs a point to spew...).

I applaud the students for not taking it to the extreme that would probably happen if a lone gay activist tried to speak out in certain areas or amongst certain groups.

They didn't infringe upon his rights in any way.

I don't know that they infringed on the speaker's rights. What the singers did was pretty childish (imho, the equivalent of putting your hands over your ears and screaming, "nah, nah, nah, I can't hear you.")

It also wasn't a very effective response. It drew a lot of attention to an idiot who everyone should have ignored.

The proper response is give the idiot a loud microphone and make sure everyone can hear him. That way we'll know who on that street is the crazy guy.

It's like one of my favorite scenes from "12 Angry Men." I think the Ed Begley character is spouting nonsense about "those people" and how all they are is criminals, and rather than try to talk, shout or sing over the top of his voice, everyone just stood up and walked away from the table.

Same thing should have been done here.

The Begley character was so ashamed he shut up. But in real life, these guys have no shame and they never shut up. They are filled with the unshakable, uncritical, unquestioning spirit of their hatred, bred into them by their poisonous parents and sealed by their ignorance.

My preferred treatment would have been for the kids to laugh him off campus. They showed far more innate love and respect than I would have. Good for them.

There is no effective difference between your "students" and the SA: both were in the business of shutting up those with whom they disagreed. They didn't use rubber truncheons like the SA, but the results were exactly the same.

Thus, they have no right to speak? Like so many of your tribe, you're a defender of free speech, except for people whose speech you don't like.

Of course they did. And you approve. Because you disagree with what he was saying.

But here is my question. Which would have provided more satisfaction to this clown? If everyone would have avoided him like he had Ebola, walked on the other side of the street, ran when they heard what he was saying? Or, when he got someone's attention to the point that they felt the need to sing to drown him out?

No question in my mind.

That's all many of these idiots are looking for --attention. For someone to get angry. For someone to respond. He baits them into a response, and like too, too many in today's world, the bait was swallowed hook, line and sinker.
