Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Ferguson at it again. 300 person brawl at a shopping mall, and chucking bricks off an overpass onto I-270. Police telling people to get in their homes.

Burn it all.

Protesters usually cite the quality of the neighborhood as a huge contributing factor.
Some tragedy happens.
Protesters proceed to destroy neighborhood.

Logic fail.

Shelby Steele has written extensively about what he calls "exceptionalism." The idea that you need to have separate, lower standards for blacks. Because, you know, slavery, Jim Crow, racism etc. We've seen it on display here with the suggestion that somehow, the "black experience" justifies mob violence, looting, arson and all the rest. It doesn't. And it's at least paternalistic, not to mention racist to suggest that it does.

Haven't read the writings, but substitute "black" with "poor." See where that gets you. I don't justify the actions by any means, but it shouldn't be read as a "racist" statement, if your posts are indications of the reasons for rioting (better conditions, better opportunities, etc). Also, not an attack on you, as you are the messenger.

The phrase "reasons for the rioting" is at the heart of this disconnect. The idea that there are "reasons" (presumably acceptable) to loot and then burn to the ground a business is nonsense. In Chicago, after the MLK riots, studies revealed the vast majority of those arrested were employed. The neighborhood around Florence & Normandy in LA is hardly the worst in the city. The problem here is moving from the general to the specific. In general, there are vast problems in some of these neighborhoods which might drive sympathetic outsiders to ascribe some degree of justification to the lawlessness. In specific, however, it's much more difficult to sympathize with some dude who throws a brick through a store window and helps himself to the merchandise. How does that honor Dr. King? Or Rodney King? Or young Mr. Brown? It doesn't. And suggesting that the tiny minority of black folks who engage in this behavior are somehow entitled or justified in doing so is an insult to the overwhelming majority of decent, law abiding black folks. Folks who may be appalled at this incident but who understand that tossing bricks off overpasses, looting, arson, shooting at cops, etc are unjustifiable behaviors, no matter what happened in the shooting. Besides, looting, burning down and ultimately driving businesses out of your neighborhood isn't a particularly good strategy for improving the quality of life in that neighborhood.

Unfortunately it is not, proving that there are those on both sides who will use a tragic event to their political ends.

Maybe it's something in the water in Minnesota. Just sayin'....

The State that brought us Governor Jesse Ventura and US Senator Al Franken have screwed up politics and politicians? Sayitaintso ...

Perhaps you should pump the brakes on Franken... He's quickly become one of the most respected people on the Hill.

No matter what Franken does, no matter if he becomes the single most well respected senator in the country, the name Senator Silly will always be attached to him for the simple fact that he's a MN senator. Just as we often have a Governor Goofy, most notably via Gov. Turnbuckle, but you could also look to our current governor, Mumbles McGee.

There is something ironic about a professional comedian being one of the most respected senators...

I guess it comes down to who you respect the most:
Derp peddlers with a JD/MD/MBA
Derp peddlers with a background in entertainment
Derp peddlers who are veterans
People you agree with who are veterans
People you agree with who have a background in entertainment
People you agree with who have a JD/MD/MBA
