Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I didn't get the day off, but LL Bean paid us 1.5 normal wages and 6 hours of holiday pay. Being a Monday, we had a lot of work from the weekend to keep us busy.

I'm salary. Doesn't matter when or how much I work, I get paid the same number.

Yeah, but they forgot where they left it, so it doesn't count! (There is a Sven and Ole joke in there somewhere.)

I have never had Columbus day off in my working life. Wait, maybe as a student employee of the UMN I may have gotten overtime for working it, can't remember (maybe because of my Norse genes).

Since graduating from college I've never worked Columbus Day. The "perk" of bank living, stuck with the OPM's federal employee holiday schedule.

I have never understood why, when virtually all of our clients are banks, we don't get Columbus Day off (only the client support people do). But it's almost always guaranteed to be a quiet day, since pretty much no one is open, and we get a floating holiday to make up for it.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

There were some counties/cities (forget which) here that wanted to rename it "America's Day" or something along those lines, before the state looked at the whole issue. IMO, so Columbus f'ed up and found this country instead of the Indies. He still "found" it, so to speak. That's a great accomplishment.

I'm surprised that, in Minnesota, with all the Scandinavians there, they don't rename it "Leif Ericson Day" as he also "discovered" North America.....

Despite the Norse reputation, the biggest historical nationality for Europeans settling MN was German. It was something like 40% German, 20% Swede, 25% Norwegian, and 15% all others.

How many drunken Irishmen did it take to lay out the streets in St. Paul? We could ask Greyeagle.

But what about Sven & Ollie? ;)

CT high school bans 18-year old senior's boyfriend from prom because he's....gasp....of drinking age!

Officials at Torrington High School rejected Mikayla Perlotto’s request earlier this month to come to the prom with Ethan Gleason, who is now 21, saying they fear he could buy alcohol for the event. Perlotto, who is 18, is appealing to the school board, and says her beau would never do a thing like that.

"I understand the biggest worry may be alcohol, but there are also so many different ways to prove that he would never do something like that," she posted on Facebook.

Perlotto approached the school in advance, telling WFSB of Hartford, "I wanted approval."

"They immediately said 'no' and I couldn't be able to," Perlotto told the station. "I wasn't really given a chance."
