To quote Jimmy Swaggert

"Lord, I have sinned"
(and continue to send those offerings in, folks!)

Alabama Gasoline Pipeline Blows Open...

And right now the gas fumes are so toxic it cant be cleaned up. Should we take bets on how lax regulations are for the pipeline and how recently they had been reduced?

Property damage and fatalities are baked into the magic of the free market. The company's insurance rates will now go sky high and they'll cease to be competitive.

Except... their industry will lobby Congress to make it impossible to prosecute them criminally; they'll pass their costs onto the same consumers who are currently being poisoned by their mistake; the donor class who are invested in the company will bribe and strong arm their representatives to vote public money to bail them out; the justice system will privilege the social utility of continuing profits over the pain and suffering of the victims and throw out the civil class action suit.

How do you know there is anything criminal involved? Pipelines fail but that doesn't mean its criminal

Re: Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

He seems nice

As a teenager on the eve of President Obama’s election in 2008, West posted, “IT’S LYNCHING TIME.” In later years, he posted derogatory comments about women and gays.

What a shock, he's a Republican.

Correct, but the point is to preclude any criminal charge in advance, even if it is warranted.

Capitalism.

Re: Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

Capitalism.

It's effective when it's considered a tool to use and regulate.

The trouble begins when people make it a sacred religion. Especially when the people doing so are powerful and merely covering their tracks / avoiding their responsibilities.

There's a reason every public library was stocked with Ayn Rand's works. The Kochs put them there, along with a national push for "study groups" and "Objectivist clubs," in one of the greatest mass-propagandizing efforts in history.

Taxpayers don't just spontaneously cut their own throats -- they have to be filled up with an ideology that tells them to.

When you start regulating capitalism, that's when you get cronyism. Then it's about pleasing the bureaucracy.
