Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

Yeah, unregulated capitalism is a great idea. We should try it.

Funny thing is if the capitalists had a sense of morality, they wouldn't need regulating.

But many think the Golden Rule means he/she that has the most gold rules and that he who has the most toys wins.

Look what happened to Richard Corey.

I would say rather that capitalism is inherently amoral, therefore even a moral capitalist, if operating strictly according to the rules, cannot act on his morality (1) because it's uncompetitive, and (2) because he has a responsibility to maximize profits for his investors.

Capitalism is like fire or electricity: it can do lots of useful work, but it needs to be contained and managed.

The other thing is capitalism is not equivalent to the free market, and in fact capitalism will naturally destroy free markets. Sometimes it does this with the complicity of the government, but it also does it on its own, as large actors distort market conditions in the same way that growing planetoids distort the local gravitational field of a solar system. And the mechanisms by which large actors prevent competition do not necessarily result in public goods like greater efficiency or quality. They can as easily coerce suppliers and drive out competitors, thus resulting in a poorer consumer experience.

You Have Got to Be Kidding Me...

"The Peachtree Ridge resource officer who first questioned T.M. set the tenor of the school’s investigation when he asked her to describe what she was wearing at the time of the assault, according to the complaint, which the family’s lawyers provided to Slate. The complaint says the officer also requested that she explain why she didn’t fight off her assailant: “Why didn’t you bite his ***** and squeeze his balls?” he allegedly asked. (The resource officer did not respond to a request for comment, nor did other school administrators named in the complaint, or the two teachers to whom T.M. originally reported the incident.)

The complaint states that within days, T.M. and her parents were informed that she would be suspended, as would the boy, until the school could conduct a joint disciplinary hearing. There, she and the alleged perpetrator, or their legal representatives, would cross-examine each other. If T.M. couldn’t prove that what she’d experienced was assault, she would be disciplined along with the boy for engaging in sexual activity on school grounds, a violation of Peachtree’s rules."

Typical.

Obviously if this is what actually occurred, it is horrible. However, it's my understanding that the Slate report, upon which this report is based, was itself relying entirely on a complaint prepared by a lawyer making or filing a claim on behalf of his client. Again, not that the allegations in that complaint can't be true, but I hesitate to report as gospel every single allegation that has been made in a lawsuit charge or complaint.

Re: Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

Ok then lets say hypothetically it is true...what is your response then?

If the allegations as written by the lawyer prove to be true, the school official should immediately be fired, and the school will end up paying a sizable chunk of change to this family.

Agreed.

For the record I am not saying if it is or isnt true cause I dont know but the story is worth posting to be discussed which is why I did.

Re: Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

Is "Cancer" Latin for "unoriginal hipster ******" cause if so then the article is exactly right! I mean I guess it is also right if it was Greek for "Made By Chinese Slave Labor" or "Created By Super ******* in a Turtle Neck" as well :D
