Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

Re: Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

While I do agree with the absurdity of the fine, I also hope that this guy follows through on his threat to move to Saudi Arabia or Syria and tells a Muslim joke. Doubt that the punishment would be a monetary fine.

He wasn't threatening anything, he was making a joke. I hear comedians have been trying to move their profession in that direction recently.

That's why it's illegal to play the unedited version of Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing" in Canada now. The line, "Look at that fa**ot, that's the way you do it" - all because the people up there can't understand context. (Hint: Dire Straits wasn't saying anything derogatory against gay men, and Canadians would understand that if they were able to understand the context in which the line was used.)

Are you ****ting me?

Re: Nice Planet XII: It's Cruel to be Kind!

I'm surprised when they banned it that they didn't also cite the line "Money for nothin' and chicks for free".

Chicks? Misogynistic. Banned.

PS - The has since been reinstated in Ca-Na-Da.

If you mean that his statement about moving to Syria or Saudi Arabia, then yeah, that was a joke and I should have enclosed "threat" in quotes or otherwise indicated that I understood he probably wasn't serious about that.

As for the original joke, it's trying to be funny at the expense of an identifiable individual who evidently has a serious medical condition and may not have long to live. He shouldn't be censured or fined by the government, and, the internet being what it is, he shouldn't be subject to the death threats and anonymous intimidation that may come he way. But if the result of his tasteless joke is that he never gets another gig as a comedian, that's fine with me. Some people confuse freedom of speech with the freedom to say anything they want without consequence.

He's basically quoting a stereotypical blue caller worker watching MTV that sees a rock star with an earring and is jealous. You're right that it wasn't Knopfler's intent but that is not obviously apparent to most.

...and your point is? We should censor media because most people are stupid?

I know a couple people that hated Dire Straits just because of that line. I argued with them numerous times before convincing them to actually listen to the ENTIRE SONG.

They're somewhat intelligent, and conceded.

"Your being offended doesn't make you right."

Can't think of the comedian (Carlin probably did a bit on this topic but this specific bit was more recent) but basically his angle was everyone gets offended at something sometime and who effing cares? And why be offended anyway? Get over it (laugh if you can) and move on with your life.

Syria is what has always been the civilian face of war. Eye witnesses in every war zone have described the same idiotic butchery. Now we just have a much more thorough record. But this is Carthage 149 BC, Baghdad 1258, Stalingrad 1943.

I thought we learned history to prevent repeating it? That's what I was told years ago. Syria is senseless.

That's what is continued to be told, yet history seems to be "erased" from the textbooks. I'm sure there are some cultures that don't even mention the Holocaust, or the Armenian genocide.

Every generation has to learn the lesson again. To be honest if we didn't learn from WW1 we will never learn.

We will have war for as long as we are descended from apes. Some clever geneticist might solve that problem someday, but until then the vast majority of monkey brains will view the world as zero sum and use violence as a first resort.
