A lot of criminals view harming a child as the absolute worst of the worst on the hierarchy of crimes. Wouldn't be surprised to see even his own gang members dropping dimes on him. Especially higher ranking ones that know this is how you rally the community against you and get a police crackdown on gangs.

Family not in the "family business" are off limits. And a kid? No.

So I don't see "mafia" here, I see gang.

Yes, I believe that there definitely are. They are not as overt in their violence, and/or hide it well, especially compared to the gangs thugs.

Agreed. I think their business models have changed significantly in the last 15-20 years.

This. You still have:

The Five Families (and they are waning) in the US
La Cosa Nostra (although it's a shell of what it once was) in Italy
Vor v Zakone in Russia
Triads in China
Yakuza (which is now in flux) in Japan

Then if you want to include them, all the cartels in Mexico/South America, although they are more like underground illegal armies.

Most mafias are more into the financial white collar things nowadays, with all the technology around. It's not running numbers on the streets, etc. It's more buying casinos, legit businesses (the union stuff is still around, or at least a form of it), etc. Anything that can be mis-reported in earnings. Sort of like a one-stop money-laundering.

For the Yakuza and Triads, golf courses were HUGE moneymakers. You could fudge the financing hardcore.
