Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

Re: Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

So saying that Van Gogh was both insane and brilliant is trying to prop up one side while deflating the other? Van Gogh painted some of the most celebrated works of art ever seen and yet somehow came to the conclusion that removing his own ear was a good idea. John Nash was insane and brilliant, is that denigrating to the man? He invented a whole branch of economics and had hallucination issues. The list goes on and on, but I'll leave you with those two well known examples.

Given how you posted that, it's obvious that you're putting more emphasis on insanity than on brilliance. This is the exact problem with the entire concept and perception of mental illness. Keep trying to prop yourself up, because at the end of the day, no one remembers the ones who pointed and laughed.

Which am I emphasizing over the other?

My personal favorite.

Speaking of a-holes whose sole purpose is to start a riot...

An anti-Islam group has called on "patriots" to hold demonstrations in front of mosques across the country in October. Responding to the call, protests organized under the name "Global Rally For Humanity" have already been scheduled for Oct. 9 and 10 in at least 20 locations, including Charleston, South Carolina; Atlanta; Dearborn, Michigan; and Phoenix, Imagine 2050 reported Tuesday. Some of the organizers have encouraged demonstrators to leave their weapons at home, while others have encouraged participants to utilize their right to bear arms, the website said.

“As this invasion of Muslim colonization continues unchecked on American soil, we can only expect the same suffering now endured by EUROPE [caps sic],” a Facebook page for a protest in Dearborn, a city outside of Detroit with a large Muslim population, said. “Now is the time to act. Now is the time to save our Republic.”

This is how WWIII is going to start. Not between two superpowers. But rather some assh00le convention is going to be protesting something when a radical version of that something is going to massacre the asshol3 convention and it's going to spread like wildfire.

Feel free to substitute either side for a hole convention and the other side for the radicals. They're fairly fungible.

Just take all the radical Christianists and all the radical Islamists and lock them in Thunder Dome with nothing but shivs. Whoever emerges, shoot.

A huge leap forward for the human genome.

That's actually kinda how the Crimean War started.

A major point in dispute was whether the Greek Orthodox should continue in exclusive possession of the keys to the main door of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, on the spot where the baby Jesus was born and cradled in the manger. The Latins had their own keys, but they were to a side door and not to the main door. There was also a row about a silver star with Latin inscriptions in the sanctuary, which had mysteriously disappeared in 1847, as well as disputes over the Latin claim to the right to repair the principal cupola of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and over the right to officiate at the Tomb of the Virgin Mary at Gethsemane. Feelings ran so high that Greek and Latin monks came to blows with crosses and candlesticks in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Lord Malmesbury, British Foreign Secretary in 1852, remarked on ‘the melancholy spectacle’ of a quarrel ‘for exclusive privileges in a spot near which the heavenly host proclaimed peace on earth and goodwill towards men … and rival churches contending for mastery in the very place where Christ died for mankind.’

Looking to gain Roman Catholic support at home, in 1852 Napoleon III demanded that the Sublime Porte in Constantinople recognise France as the protector of Christian monks and pilgrims in the Holy Places. As a hint he sent a French warship up the Dardanelles and the Porte bowed to his wishes and had a key to the Church of the Nativity’s main door handed over to the Latins. The whole situation was a red rag to Tsar Nicholas I, traditional champion of the Greek Orthodox, who insisted on Russia being confirmed by the Porte as the protector of the Holy Places and of all Orthodox Christians in the Ottoman Empire. When the Porte quibbled, in July of 1853 a Russian army invaded the Ottoman provinces of Moldavia and Wallachia (modern Romania). The Turks declared war and in November the Russians destroyed a Turkish fleet at Sinope in the Black Sea.

Didn't we already do that? Crusades? Battle of Lepanto? Battle of Vienna? Deus Vult!!!

Re: Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

Let's take one look at what's happened with parenting over the last 30 years: Kid's a little hyper? Drug it. Kid won't sit down? Drug it. Kid's talking too much? Drug it. Cases for ADD have gone up exponentially, as it helps to fund big pharma.

Oh, and guess what all the mass shooters in the past few years have in common. I'll give you three guesses, but you'll only need one.

I almost feel shame that I agree with this post, although on a grander scale. Everyone has something wrong with them, but hey, there's a drug for that! I won't address the big pharm angle, but I will address the fact that somehow, some way, there is magically a drug for everything nowadays, and it's become an easy way out for too many things.

My bro was actually tested for ADD/ADHD back in the day. Diagnosis? He just has energy and if it's not dedicated to doing SOMETHING physical (like working with his hands: funny, he's a mechanic) he gets bored. "Problem" fixed.

Re: Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

Ya know, as time goes on we actually learn things and improve on our ability to help people. Not everyone (or even most) of the people diagnosed with something are over medicated or misdiagnosed. Just because 20 years ago things were unknown or missed doesnt mean they didnt exist.

Or should we go back to not treating vets with PTSD and just tell them to sack up and move on. (like we did after the World Wars, Korea and Vietnam) Maybe we should tell football players to grow a pair and forget about concussions because back in the 70s no one cared about them and they all seemed fine. Maybe we should just lock up all the crazy people and those with autism or even Downs Syndrome in asylums like the good ole days...or maybe we should just admit that we know more than we used to and overall things used to be a lot worse than our memories allow us to remember.

People, this is the kind of pseudoscience crap that leads to people with an actual disease being ostracized or the disease being completely dismissed. This can be as dangerous or even more dangerous because people with legitimate mental illnesses no longer get treatment. It's the same crap that caused infectious diseases we haven't seen in decades come back in full force.

Yes, because your brother doesn't have it, no one does.

This. Sure there are plenty of cases where Johnny just needs a swift kick in the ***. but there are real mental issues out there that range from quality of life to learning disabilities to minor behavioral issues to developmental issues like Downs and autism to dangerous predilections and lack of control.

It's easy to write off even the most minor or mis-diagnosed disease unless you live with it. All of the myths dissolve and **** becomes pretty real, pretty fast.

Re: Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

I'd like to see data to prove how many kids are medicated today versus 10, 20, 40 years ago. And funny Brent that in your crtiticisms you did fall short of calling out the biggest pill pusher on the planet Big Pharm.

And the doctors that cooperate with them.

No one here, not even me, is denying that some people truly have these issues and truly require assistance. The Big Pharma angle should be considered here though, because as much money and research goes into developing these sorts of medications, you have to recuperate the money somehow. So why not "bend" the diagnosis a bit and give the drug to 50,000 people that don't need it? You'll make a killing! Sadly, that also applies literally. :(

Oh BTW, PTSD is not limited to people in the military, either.

There's no shame in being in agreement. We're all going to agree on some things, and disagree on others. Otherwise, life would be easy. I'm not going to sig you for it; that's reserved for those that make it a purpose to push my disagreement with "mainstream" beliefs.

Honest question: who?

I'm not dismissing anyone who has a true problem. I do have questions regarding how quickly a parent or person will just "medicate" without really making sure there's an issue there.

You'd be surprised as to how many actually do. There are some baby factories out there that just sit on their rump watching Jerry Springer, have the kid in the corner of the eye, and if they aren't behaving normally, assume there'll be some magic pill that "fixes the problem".

I like to call it the "whatever" factor. Two things come into play for the "whatever" factor: One, how involved in what goes into your child are you? Are you asking questions and/or researching effects, or are you just trusting without fail? Two, what sort of steps are you taking to try to correct the problem without going to the drugs before finding it to be a "late resort" (don't want to use last resort, because it's not always a final option, especially when it's a true issue)?
