Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

Re: Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

Every outlet that's covered the story in detail and not just a blurb has mentioned it.

Oh, they'll be getting in line very quickly. Watch them retract that portion in a couple days. Pravda would never put that out there.

Re: Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

And guess how you do that? You pass a law removing the exemptions...

It is true that it does take an act to remove another, just like how they needed the 21st Amendment to repeal the 18th. The point is that the total number of laws on the books is what needs to decrease.

Re: Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

We cant do that and you know it. We keep hearing about the holes in the system (mental health, background checks) but the same people scream to high heaven to keep those holes in the system. You cant have it both ways. Either the rules become enforceable or new rules are needed.

Face facts, there is almost no oversight over who can get a gun or how many.

And "pray the stupid people follow the law" is probably the dumbest idea I have read on here in a decade...and it has been a very stupid decade. The stupid people dont learn, that is why they are stupid. But hey trust them cause...reasons?

No matter what laws are or are not passed, we just have to hope that they learn, or are too stupid to do any harm. I'm not saying that is a solution at all. It's just a side note to all the other stuff. BTW, this particular side note can be said for all things, not just guns.

And if gun-issuers/govt/etc actually connected all the dots and crossed all the t's, etc, it WOULD be more difficult to acquire a gun. The potential is there, but loopholes and workers not doing a complete job of checks and such...recipe for trouble.

As for banning all guns, there are WAY too many guns in this country for that to happen. Some have brought up Australia. Australia is an ISLAND. So, for that to happen here, all of North and South America would have to follow suit. Somehow I don't think that will happen.

There are plenty of restrictions short of banning. The main issues right now are (1) the NRA, as a profiteering lobby, is at war on any restrictions, and (2) guns are an untouchable cultural totem on the right. Without those complications we could have sane gun policy that protects hunters and self-defense while not turning the country into an arms bazaar.

And I'd take an educated guess that most of those restrictions are in place. Key word: most. I would think closing the loopholes in the current laws would complete the restrictions that many want.

One thing I did see coming from who knows where (it kind of went viral, so I don't know the source):

Guy poaches a lion. Everyone blames the guy.
Guy shoots a bunch of people. Everyone blames the guns.

Doesn't make sense to me.

Now, I know these are over-generalizations, but there is a sense of truth to the statements, too.

Of course you're in favour of making the citizens of this country defenceless against a tyrannical government. We MUST be able to defend ourselves.

Single guy poaches lion, everyone is super ****ed at him for being an *******.
In the past 1004 days there have been 994 mass shootings.

The statements are so incomparable that it's not even funny. It's nearly a daily event for someone to use an easily acquired deadly weapon to kill multiple people. There are not proper restrictions in place and even if there are in one part of the country it's easy to take a short trip and not face any restrictions.

Then they use a knife. Or a crossbow. Heck, there's a guy with videos to show how to use things you can buy in gift shops in the "secure" sections of airports to make effective weapons.

Maybe the answer isn't to go after the weapons.

It's still the person that carries out the actions, is my point. And while I'm no fan of Flaggy's bit, resorting to grade-school insults is pretty weak.

And as flaggy tried to do the usual deflection, that person needs access to such weapons in order to commit these mass killings. Don't much care how you think me insulting him sounds. He's a ***** who posts garbage. It's quite amusing that that got through the filters.

If a person is that hell-bent on getting a weapon, they will get that weapon. Period. It won't matter bans, restrictions, whatever. Accept this fact, then approach the situation again.

Edit: all bans/restrictions do is prevent the people who should be able to have guns, not have guns.

Teens/young men without a lot of money aren't going to have all these "criminal" connections to stockpile some illegal collection. They aren't taking trips to other countries to smuggle pistols back. They are going to the nearest store or a relative and taking what they want because it's easy.

The 'they'll get a weapon regardless' talking point is just hot air and is predicated on the easy availability of firearms. Something that should not be with bans/restrictions. Please provide something to backup that shows how all these young men would still have gotten their guns if relatives or stores didn't give them access.

And as for "good guys" having guns, the presence of guns actually increases the overall risk of death/violence.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24054955
RESULTS:
Among the 27 developed countries, there was a significant positive correlation between guns per capita per country and the rate of firearm-related deaths (r = 0.80; P <.0001). In addition, there was a positive correlation (r = 0.52; P = .005) between mental illness burden in a country and firearm-related deaths. However, there was no significant correlation (P = .10) between guns per capita per country and crime rate (r = .33), or between mental illness and crime rate (r = 0.32; P = .11). In a linear regression model with firearm-related deaths as the dependent variable with gun ownership and mental illness as independent covariates, gun ownership was a significant predictor (P <.0001) of firearm-related deaths, whereas mental illness was of borderline significance (P = .05) only.

Considering how quickly you responded, I am dubious that you even looked at the link I gave or any of the studies/sources that were linked within. Which covers various aspects of access to weapons and what the "good guys" with them tend to do.

Re: Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

When I was about 20 and very poor, I was 3 calls from anything you needed, including a gun. And I actually was an upstanding citizen. I just knew people who knew people, etc.

Guns are about education, mental attitude/health, and general attitude as to when to use a gun.

All of these are very tough to change, as it requires a complete overhaul of our society's thinking.

I think we can all agree that tougher mental health standards are a start, and closing loopholes is a very good idea. Bans won't work. More restrictions won't work. Guess what? We tried that. And believe me, I'm no fan of the NRA.

Re: Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

Here's the problem I see. The second amendment isn't going anywhere and we need to do something about gun violence.

The two endpoint sate set. Where's the middle ground?

Since the bans/restrictions first really started, have the mass shootouts gone up or down? There's a start. Give you all a hint: it ain't because of the guns.

Re: Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

Australia hasn't had one since they banned guns. As a country. Not a city.

They are also a FRIGGIN' ISLAND which makes things easier. Just sayin'.

Edit: I addressed this point earlier in the thread.

Re: Nice Planet X: I knew it, I'm surrounded by a-holes!

Um, no. They are a continent. An entire ****ing continent. They are not an island by any definition of the word.

Is there any other country attached to them? You know, for access? NO. So, in this debate, they are an ISLAND.

To ban in the US, you'd have to ban in North AND South America. Yeah, not gonna happen.

Think: Chi:US is US:Americas
