Re: Nice Planet, Part 2: A-holes on parade

Seriously? They're going hog-wild about the term midget? I guess we need to change how hockey structures its young people's leagues...

No more squirts -- and what happens to the Quebec Peewee tournament?

Re: Nice Planet, Part 2: A-holes on parade

Parker suspended indefinitely by ESPN.

Good - hopefully 'indefinitely' is a long, long time.

Meanwhile....

Re: Nice Planet, Part 2: A-holes on parade

The story doesn't say it's statutory. Says it's first degree. Big difference.
Confusingly written, since it goes on to stress the age of consent. Of course, if he were being charged for having sex with someone under consenting age, one would assume that the girls would have had to be charged with the same thing.

First degree usually means forcible. It don't matter what the ages involved are when that's the case.

I don't know if this belongs in the shooting thread and I can't find the image, but there are first class a-hats that are crying about the shooting coverage cutting into Ellen because Justin Bieber was on. All I have to say is "Go directly to hell. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200."

Isn't this the reason for having 24-hour news channels, though? Obviously I'm not trying to say that I take interest in Canadian boys (unless they happen to have an RPI jersey on, and even then not in that way), but if you're going to have a regular AND all-news channel, there's no point in breaking into the regular one. Cover it when you do your primetime spot.

I'm not trying to pick a fight, obviously, but I thought people originally thought this was an issue and then came up with a solution.

Totally agree. Sadly, this phenomenon isn't exactly new. During the extensive coverage of the JFK killing, some folks were b*tching that their "stories" were being pre-empted.

I think every month, when I went to a chat for TPiR and it was pre-empted by a GWB news conference, all I read was whining about it for the whole hour.

This is a programming question as old as TV. Cable channels provide flexibility we didn't have decades ago. That's part of the reason why national political conventions have largely disappeared from netwok coverage. But not everybody has cable/satellite TV. I've spent most of the afternoon bouncing back and forth between Fox and CNN. Frankly, I have no idea how much coverage the networks gave this event. It used to be suggested that for major breaking events coverage would rotate among the networks. The JFK assassination would be on NBC, for instance, while the other networks continued with their regular programming. The obivous weakness here is that while there would be a few folks who would watch "The Gong Show" during the presidential funeral, most would not. Plus, in the old days, networks were very proud of their news divisions, which were run by and populated with professionals. And network newsrooms would be in open rebellion if they were kept from reporting on major stories.

I'm not trying to pick a fight either, but you need to clarify your statement that your "interest in Canadian boys" is related to their wardrobe.

DU doesn't have too many international hockey players, eh? ;)

5 or 6. We have more from Colorado than we do from anywhere else. A significant change from the old days. We've now got our 3rd Shore brother on the team (a fourth is pending). They're from Denver and their parents are both graduates of DU Law School.

Tim Sheehy was the first American player Murray Armstrong ever made a play for. The kid wound up at BC. Their coach, of course, was the legendary John "Snooks" Kelly. At the national championship that year Sheehy said he regretted his choice. He wanted a hockey coach and got a priest instead.

Understandable. We've been starting to recruit quite a bit from NY, but still have a large number of Canadian players or players who played juniors in Canada.

Jason Zucker, our high scoring forward who left last season with eligibility remaining, is from hockey crazy Las Vegas. And we've got a freshman from Marina del Rey, for cripes sake. It's clearly a good thing our game has expanded. Back in my college days, the idea that DU would have a kid on the ice from either Vegas or Marina del Rey was inconcievable. The only "American" on the squad in my day was my friend Craig Patrick, whose family had a division of the NHL named after them. He was listed as being from St. Louis, because his dad was GM of the Blues. A technicality, obviously.

Craig Patrick... that name sounds familiar... famous assistant coach by any chance?

Played on two NC teams at DU. Had a solid NHL career. Was assistant coach on the '80 Olympic team. Hired Herb Brooks to coach for him when he was GM of the Rangers. And was GM of two cup winning Penguins teams. Other than that, no hockey history to speak of.
