Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

Sigh. More of the same.

Maine state police say a convicted sex offender is on the run after shooting four people in three northern Maine towns last night. Anthony Lord, 35, is considered armed-and-dangerous, and may be driving a stolen logging truck.

Last night, Lord allegedly shot people in the towns of Lee, Benedicta and Silver Ridge. So far, no information about their conditions has been released.

I read that earlier. It's amazing that people can pass along the blame for actions they alone took. After being treated the way they were by their daughter, would anybody really blame them if they just let her get a true crash course in budgeting and responsibility by financially cutting her off entirely? Not only will you pay for your college schooling, but you will pay for rent while in our house, purchase your own groceries, and pay for all of your own vehicle expenses, too. The girl could really learn what life is like for so many others out there.

Wasn't there some teenager in, like, New Jersey or somewhere, that sued her parents because of that exact activity? It would have been entertaining to see that happen again, along with using the PPACA as a basis for dependency.

No words. Just... none. This girl is stupid on every single level possible. She deserves to live in a refrigerator box under a bridge somewhere.

Does someone really have to TEACH you not to blow $90,000 on vacations and clothes when you have other expenses? Did she think she still had the money after she spent it?

And she wants her parents to dig into their RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS to help her? OH HELL NO sister.

If she has a boyfriend, I feel sorry for him.

It was probably all done through credit cards or something.

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

Gawker done gone and effed up.

Last night they posted this story. (cached, actual story gone) tl;dr, the CFO of Conte Nast, who used to own Reddit and I believe still has some influence (and for some reason Gawker has a huge rivalry with Reddit) got a male escort for his trip to Chicago. Yada yada, the male escort is a male porn star and essentially blackmailed the CFO in an attempt to get him to take up his apartment lawsuit with HUD. The author of the article decided to hide the identity of the escort, i.e. the blackmailer, but fully expose the CFO. Note: Gawker is the same site that had tons of articles on how awful the people were who looked at Fappening pics, but is also currently being sued by Hulk Hogan for exposing his sex tape.

Today, Gawker's founder took it down and issued an apology, if you can call it that. The apology essentially can be tl;dr'd into "People are soft nowadays. We're sorry because we had to take it down, not because we posted it."

There's a lawyer in the comments of the story who says that the author and Gawker could potentially be liable for assisting in blackmail. If so, along with the Hulk Hogan case, it could be bye-bye Gawker. Which unfortunately could mean bye-bye Deadspin, but positively for the world would mean good bye Jezebel.

There were a couple cases in NJ over the past few years. One where a high school girl left her parents home because she didn't like her parents' rules and sued them for tuition plus room and board; that ended with the girl moving back with her parents, I believe. The other was a college student who sued her estranged parents, who had divorced (likely leading to her ditching them) for two years worth of tuition to an out-of-state school; that girl won her case.

You're burying the lede: it could mean bye-bye io9, and that would be tragic. Foxtrot Alpha on Gizmodo is also great.

My understanding from reading between the lines of comments is the Gawker founder and the Reddit founder have not only a professional but a personal animus. Now throw in that Gawker users are hipsters who hate the Gawker founder and Reddit users are pimply Gamergate-level boys who hate everyone, and you've got a 24/7 steel cage war of all against all.

As long as Drew Magary and io9 land safely, the world would be better off if both sites and their users DIAF.

BTW, Jezebel is better than it seems. After reading it pretty steadily now, it punctures most of the inane stereotypes about angry feminists, and believe me, the different camps on that site skewer one another more cleverly and relentlessly than even the most diligent knuck could ever dream.

Jezebel and Haisley disappearing would be a boon to society, and I'm someone who loves most of the Gawker stuff (Deadspin, Kotaku, io9).

Here's a simple summary of Jezebel: RAPE CULTURE! Patriarchy! Pitch Perfect is teh Greatest Movie Ever!

There was a USA Today article about Gawker handling the escort story. There were a few writers who said they never thought it should have gotten published. Of course, one tweeted that and then linked the article, essentially defeating the purpose. Then they got a quote from a Jezebel writer who said something along the lines of "A cheating spouse with an escort? Of course it's going to get run!"

Oh really? Because I guarantee if it was a woman being outed cheating on her husband with a woman escort there would be talk of slut-shaming and being out to get women in power.

The only thing Jezebel has that is worth anything is the worst restaurant customer stories.

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

If Jezebel causes this much consternation from this audience, I'd say they're doing their job. :)

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

Not really, though I read some of the court testimony.

The tl;dr is he thought he was worthless and believed killing people would add to his self-worth. The basic thought that if he killed someone, he absorbed their value in/from society to his own worth. He even had a "points" system for how many/which people he could kill. He picked a midnight showing to avoid killing children, but still got one and kinda went "eh, it happened."

I'm torn on reading manifestos - on the one hand you don't want to give the guy the attention he's seeking after what he did, on the other it's good to know how he got where he was mentally.

So, Highlander without the swords?

Gawker and it's cousin sites have become some of the worst websites out there. It used to be whimsical and entertaining. Now it's just "YAAAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH YOOOUUUU'RE A FFFFUCCCCCCCCING RACIST!!!!!!"

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH OMFG

Oh... Wait... you were... serious?

Kep, no. Jezebel is probably the worst of the worst in Kinja

Frankly, Gawker needs to be taken down a peg or two. Or ten. It's gotten as preachy as a Baptist minister after the gay marriage ruling.
