Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

I read the article differently. It sounded like 2/3 of the land mass is currently zoned exclusively for single-family homes. They are proposing allowing multi-family units in all or some of that area. Not going to multi-family exclusively. If I have read it correctly, that makes sense for a city that is growing in population. If you set aside such a large part of the city for single-family structures exclusively, the population can only get so big. And pricing will go through the roof.

Nowhere in the article does it say anything about 2/3 (unless you're referring to a video that happens to be there; Flash is blocked on this browser and I don't feel like overriding it at this time). And it specifically states getting rid of the single-family zoning and replacing it with multi-family. Probably not in one fell swoop, but rather annexing it gradually. Also, according to this committee, it looks like you're a racist if you have single-family property. That's how they're trying to justify this one.

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

You know this is the equivalent of Inhofe and the snowball, right?

Keep believing Trofim Lysenko. The fact of the matter is that with any form of gun control, all you are doing is making the law-abiding citizen defenceless. Criminals don't follow laws. They will get a weapon whether you pass legislation or not. This is exactly why the UK is now trying to ban knives. Pretty much anything can be made into a weapon, including the human body.

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

Yeah that's nice and all but look at the rate stats of gun violence in those countries compared to ours.

And no I'm not for banning guns altogether in the US but let's not act like gun violence is the same across all countries despite the differing laws.

Here it is. The U.S. firearm suicide rate is very troubling. It's double the homicide rate (which is already sky high). (compare to a place like Venezuela with 39 homicide to 1 suicide)

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

Is a suicide by firearm somehow worse than suicide by pills, or hanging or taking a swan dive off a tall building?

Certainly not. I'd go with the gun every time, and I have several to choose from if it came to that. What's depressing to me is, why are so many Americans offing themselves by any means?

Tall structure* for me. No way to screw it up.

(* got my bridge picked out already)

I've considered it, but doubt I'd have the nerve to commit to the flight time. Whereas you can't really screw up with a heavy-caliber rifle to the temple, and the flight time of a bullet is insignificant at that range.
...But I got on the right meds, and haven't revisited the issue for 20 years or so.

You don't really need to maintain that commitment...

It won't be a gun because when my Mom was an RN she worked a ward with guys who had given it their best shot and missed. No chance am I risking that type of hell.

I actually know a guy well who did that. But he missed completely (I'd call it flinching). If you understand guns it could be at least as foolproof as the jump. (I know another guy whose parachute failed, he was in a lot of casts for a while but could have just as easily been permanently paralyzed).
edit: my memory is bad; the parachute wasn't torn, he landed in a treetop and cut himself loose, hurt himself falling to the ground.

Suicide? Running car, small enclosed space, just fall asleep. IMO that's the "best" way to go.

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

This is horrific and morbid. Seriously, seek help if you have even the briefest of moments where you consider it. I recently went through the aftermath of a friend taking his life (who happened to be my roommate's really close friends) and it's hellish.

That said, car in the garage. Easy to bail on second thoughts. Painless.

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

When I have terminal cancer I'm going to fight until the bitter end. When it takes my life. I just don't like the idea of suicide.

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

If I have terminal cancer the hookers and blow are coming out.

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

Of course, the obligatory experiential mental health "expert" chimes in to try and shame us. Hey it's cool, every forum has at least one of them. ;)

Well, of course. But if I'm going to off myself, I just want to go to "sleep."

If I have a terminal illness, God help us all. I'll act like the craziest of crazy.
