Re: Nice Planet © 2009

Good point, as something like this can and would only ever happen in NYC. I'm glad to see you took the reasonable angle with this story.

Exactly where did I say that in my post?

I'm waiting...

edit: And besides, you can refute it if you like, but its no secret that there are tons of people in NYC who think they are better than the rest of the country, solely because they live there. And let's say this sort of incident does happen elsewhere in the U.S. (I didn't, and wouldn't, say otherwise). Doesn't that just further prove my point that people from NYC are no better than anyone else, despite their love of telling everyone they are?

You were clearly insulting people in NYC, generalizing and just generally being a dink.

How many people do you know from NYC. I mean personally know.

There are a ton of good people in NY, I've lived in both NYC and MN and I'll tell you the people in NYC are FAR more pleasant than the people in MN. And you see I can say this with personal knowledge.

I may have inferred a little strongly. But people anywhere in the country, urban or rural, coastal or inland, have pretty much the same hometown pride that results in them feeling that where they are from is superior for any number of reasons; that's not necessarily a bad thing, some hometown pride is good motivation to keep working to better one's area of residence. So to use that story as a potshot seems like an unnecessary move when people from NYC are no different in pumping up their local stomping ground than anyone else and would certainly never try to claim that something like in that story could never happen there.

Agreed on most fronts. I certainly have pride in where I'm from as most people do. I tend to think New Yorkers take it to the next level. How often do you hear them say that they live in the greatest city in the world? I live in Minneapolis and have never once heard anyone proclaim it as such. Just an example.

You were clearly insulting people in NYC, generalizing and just generally being a dink.

1. I was insulting those people who think we should put them on a throne solely because they live in New York. You're right though, I didn't specify that and my statement was made in general, which it shouldn't have been.

2. Off the top of my head I can only name two. Both very nice. Both LOVED to talk about NYC and how great it was compared to here. Honestly. I worked with one lady who literally talked about nothing else. Everything that happened would be compared to "back in the Bronx" and then I'd get to hear about how it never would have went down that way "back in the Bronx" because people there would have done this or that....yadda yadda yadda. So yes, a limited sample, but you can see I have just a bit of personal knowledge myself.

3. "people in NYC are FAR more pleasant than the people in MN." Now who's generalizing? ;)
You're one of the most opinionated people I've encountered on this board (not inferring that as a negative, and I think you'd agree its true). Do you think that might just have a little bit to do with the fact that you interact better with people from New York? :p
Besides the people I personally know, I've met several people over the years from New York. I personally didn't care for many of them. So we've had different experiences, and maybe neither one of us is more right than the other.

Now please proceed to tell me that because you've lived there and I haven't, my opinion is wrong.

Santa Clara County bans Happy Meal toys.

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-happy-meals-20100428,0,6355743.story

It’s a sad day for Happy Meals in Santa Clara County
County officials vote to ban toys and other promotions that restaurants offer with high-calorie children’s meals.
By Sharon Bernstein, Los Angeles Times

Happy Meal toys and other promotions that come with high-calorie children's meals will soon be banned in parts of Santa Clara County unless the restaurants meet nutritional guidelines approved Tuesday by the county Board of Supervisors.

"This ordinance prevents restaurants from preying on children's' love of toys" to sell high-calorie, unhealthful food, said Supervisor Ken Yeager, who sponsored the measure. "This ordinance breaks the link between unhealthy food and prizes."

Maplewood officer slain in St. Paul; one suspect killed, second arrested

A Maplewood police officer was shot and killed in St. Paul this morning.

Hours later, during the manhunt that followed on the East Side, police shot and killed one of the suspects while another was apprehended.

I shoot and edit for the Maplewood police TV show. I did not meet this officer, but it's going to be tough for the department. This coming 8 months after the neighboring city, North St. Paul had an officer killed in the line of duty and another Maplewood officer was injured backing him up.

What's wrong with these people?!

Re: Nice Planet © 2009

Apparently someone called in a car jacking. They responded and the officer was sitting in his car when they walked up to the car window and shot him.
