Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

sorry but there are numerous ways to protest without attempting to take over the mass pike and disrupt traffic in other locations. it's idiotic no matter when, worse when you consider people on the road due to thanksgiving. and that's not even taking into consideration emergency situations you could be interfering with. it's beyond dumb.

I already said that the driver should have gone slower. But I maintain him driving ahead was warranted, and if some idiot doesn't want to move, well, screw 'em.
They're not idiots, they're protesters practicing civil obedience. They're trying to draw attention and make a point without causing any serious damage to the community. Maybe relax a little and, ya know, NOT *ING RUN OVER PEOPLE WITH YOUR CAR!

I can't believe this is actually necessary, but here is the relevant Minnesota statute:

169.21 - Subd. 3.(d) said:
Notwithstanding the other provisions of this section every driver of a vehicle shall (1) exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicycle or pedestrian upon any roadway and (2) give an audible signal when necessary and exercise proper precaution upon observing any child or any obviously confused or incapacitated person upon a roadway.

The "other provisions in this section" establish when pedestrians have right-of-way. Basically, it boils down to "even if those people in front of you shouldn't be there, you've got to try not to hit them". Or, you know, common sense for non-sociopaths.

If they see a car approaching them, and don't move out of the way, they are an idiot. Let the car pass, then continue protesting. I have no problem with that approach.

I certainly wouldn't argue with any of this.

Mis-interpreting there. If the driver inched forward, that is exercising due care. They are not plowing through the crowd. They are not running over a pedestrian crossing the street.

Although, you may be correct with "confused or incapacitated person" since the people didn't move out of the way of a moving vehicle. ;)

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

It comes down to which action occurred first: did the protesters swarm the car and jump on the hood before or after the driver moved forward? If it was before, and I'm the driver, I'm flooring it until those people aren't on my car anymore.

The driver moved into the crowd at an unsafe speed, at first. Once that was in motion, and the protesters started smashing his windows, I'd have floored it, too.

However, if the driver had inched forward, F the protesters blocking his way.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Ok people, so what is the "approved" method for protesting? In a square, chanting, maybe a few signs, but nothing too loud because I want to ignore you and have go away please?

Everybody here is always complaining that today's young people are lazy and don't care about anything. Yet, here they are out trying to raise awareness about cause and the only response is "SHUT UP AND GET OUT OF THE WAY IDIOTS!"

Holy extreme. You know why the NYC people didn't get run over, and the protest continued? THEY LET PASSERSBY ALONE.

Right, when all the suburban kids are out in the street playing street hockey, don't they pretty much have to call Car and slide the goal off to the side and let the vehicle go by before they can resume play??

For once, the village idiot makes a point.

If they want to tell "my strong black brothers" to stop stealing cheap cigars and chit they can yell as long as they want ;)

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Using a multi ton vehicle to push your way through a crowd is exercising due care as long as you're "inching forward". This is your honest to god opinion?

That is giving fair warning and due diligence, and exercising your law-abiding right to the road. Unlike the law-breakers who are impeding traffic, again ILLEGALLY. So yes, that is my opinion.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Know what? I'm going to stand in the middle of the highway, with a sign supporting AP, and protesting his suspension. If I get hit, I'll be rich. You know, if I don't die first. THAT'S MY RIGHT!

Nice strawman there.

They were letting people by. This guy changed lanes right in front of the protesters and didn't even give them a chance!

What do you want out of these people then? You, rightfully, complain about rioting and looting. You complain about them blocking and slowing traffic, a reasonable, non-violent action. What should they do then?

Protest. Stand in the street. Fine. Let the passersby go by. I already said the driver was in the wrong by proceeding ahead faster than necessary. However, the driver had EVERY right to proceed, which the protesters generally ignored, and then the protesters further broke the law by attacking the car of said driver.
And they did not let the driver go by. The video shows that.

BS, he didn't even stop. He didn't give them a chance to move. They impeded him because a woman was trapped underneath the car!
