Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Ok, I am NOT I repeat I am NOT saying that the police should not have been preparing for this situation. What I am saying is that these preparations should not have been put out front and center. That there should have been an attempt to diffuse the situation before it even started.

Wouldn't have mattered.

A certain element was spoiling for this fight.

It was utterly predictable with or without a police presence.

They did prepare. They prepared correctly. They did not engage the protesters until the protesters VERY ACTIVELY engaged the cops. They anticipated a situation that was likely to happen, and only reacted when a reaction was necessary. They did not provoke.

This is not difficult.

BOO FRICKITY BOO HOO!!!!

You know what they could have all done? Protested peacefully, and not flipped ****, rob and loot stuff. Nobody's holding a gun to their heads to go out and throw rocks at the stormtroopers.
Absolutely they should not have gone out and rioted and looted. I fully believe that those people should be punished. But to assume that those are the only things wrong with this situation is blindly ignoring major problems.

My understanding is the cops have been working with local community groups all along. 'Course the New Black Panther Party and the National Lawyers Guild, to name two, aren't customarily thought of as local community groups. Bottom line: you're casting about desperately for any reason you can come up with to diminish the richly deserved contempt we have for the Ferguson thugs. Won't work.

There were officers in riot gear outside of the police station well before the press conference. I'm not saying they actively provoked these people, I'm saying they didn't do anything to calm people.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

If the pro-Michael Brown witnesses did in fact lie about the cop's actions, they are more responsible for all of this than anyone else.

Had all of the witnesses agreed (and not apparently lied) on what happened right away - this would have fizzled immediately.

Well, Brown's little buddy, who described the cop trying to pull a 300 pounder into his lap and made up the detail about Brown having his hands up certainly lied. With that narrative taking hold almost immediately, how willing would you have been to contradict it if you lived in that neighborhood?

The can calm those mother effers by cuffing and stuffing 'em.

Officer shot in University City.

And apparently a midget wearing a strap-on just hijacked a news van?!

I'm sorry, but if I'm going to protest, and I see a cop roll up in riot gear....me, being an intelligent person, will think to myself: "Ok, I'm NOT going to push the limits on this one. I'll say my piece, be polite, and NOT THROW STUFF AT THEM OR DESTROY COP CARS/PROPERTY."

Again, not that difficult.

According to reports, some did during the testimony - agreeing with the cop's side of the story.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

AJ has a reporter down in the small business district where the fires are. No police/fire presence for at least an hour. Fires are hopping from building to building. Meanwhile in another part of town, the reporter who was marching with the protesters it is completely calm. In the background you can see a restaurant that is open for business as if nothing unusual was happening.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Faux went to commercial right as a tactical team was surrounding a gas station.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Yep, letting things burn. Reports of firefighters (unconfirmed) being shot at.

Absolutely. But you take a group of people who have a large amount of mistrust and anger towards police and place officers in riot gear in front of them? It's like red flag to a bull.

If anything, the response has been too little, too late.

My point exactly, not publicly. Not on CNN. WaPo first reported more than a half dozen of them disputed the dominant narrative several weeks ago. Again, if you saw it differently how public would you have wanted to be? We should be grateful they were brave enough to come forward and tell their stories under oath.

This afternoon CNN showed several clips of the "witnesses" whose stories we'd already heard. Including Brown's little buddy. The question was asked, how we can expect no true bill with those witnesses? No mention of the other witnesses. It was Jake Tapper who did that, and he's the best CNN's got by a mile.

Then that is on them, and not the cops.

I don't understand you going out of your way to rationalize this lawlessness.

Again, a certain element was spoiling for this and would have found a way to provoke it and make it happen - even if the cops were dressed as ballerinas and handing out cookies and hot cocoa.
