I didn't know a player died on the field.

Closest I ever saw was the Clint Malarchuk. That was disturbing enough. Thankfully he recovered (and played about a week later ).

And that's understandable, it wouldn't be out of the question. But it's the fear and assumption of the worst in everyone by people that is a cause in this. You, an already angry person, see police officers, whom you have a large degree of distrust, dressed in riot gear, basically ready for battle, you're gonna react accordingly. I can understand having police in riot gear held in reserve, ready to go, but to have them front and center even before the announcement was wrong.

You don't honestly believe that nothing would have happened if the cops hadn't been there do you?

The night would have gone by in peace?

Of course people rioting, looting, etc. are not protected and should be dealt with. I NEVER SAID THEY SHOULDN'T. But, at the beginning, people in front of a police station need not be met with police in riot gear.

The politicians and the police leaders expected violence and violence is what they got.

All you experts of cop tactics, equipment and uniforms give me gas. Police work in these kinds of situations is always ugly, no matter what the cops are wearing. And this nonsense is merely more justification for very bad behavior. The authorities "got" violent, typical, even stereotypical behavior because that's what some folks always do. There's a difference between the freedom riders and thugs looting a liquor store. And that's what they'd done in that same location just three months ago. And that's what some had been planning for in the interim.
