Interesting. I've been meaning to see that movie (having some difficulty persuading the missus). I had heard it is based at least in part on actual events, but I didn't know there was a book.

Besides, that song gives me hope, reminds me that spring is coming!!

I'm kind of curious how you would have handled it as a police officer in that situation?

A judge issues a warrant. It now becomes your job, as an officer, to search the home (and possibly the persons present), for the evidence identified in the warrant.

You know, beforehand, who the suspects are and who you're likely to find in the home. You know there is a history of convictions for violent assault crimes. You know that at least one of the persons is licensed to carry, and conceal, a handgun?

The Ankeny police apparently mishandled this, in your opinion.

So how do you handle it? Walk up in your Joe Friday outfit, alone, knock on the door and explain you'd like to come in and take a look around?

I don't think the use of the SWAT team had anything to do with the crime. It could have been a theft of $1000 or $1,000,000. I think the SWAT team was used because of the type of environment the police would be walking into. And they didn't exactly turn out to be wrong about it either, did they? I mean there was an armed man hiding in the bathroom, who had drawn his weapon. There were surveillance cameras. Who's to say that if one or two cops show up alone that the reaction of the suspects would have been the same. If I'm an armed criminal sitting in my home and I see a SWAT team roll up my front walk, I'm probably going to rethink going all Butch Cassidy/Sundance Kid on them.

I know this was posted awhile ago, but pepper spray terrifies me for reasons such as this. It is considered a non-leathal force and is used to subdue crowds.

As a person with a very low capsaicin tolerance/pepper allergy I doubt I would live through being pepper sprayed. Granted, an allergic reaction is how the spray is effective. But as someone who needs an antihistimine in order to breath after eating a small amount of cayenne pepper, I can only imagine how quickly my throat would swell shut if I were pepper sprayed.

I also know people who have been pepper sprayed just because they were part of a crowd somewhere. Paranoid, yes, I probably am, but it still concerns me that something that can result in death is considered non-leathal.

Under that reasoning, a bag of peanut M&Ms could be considered a lethal weapon. Need to use some common sense. Outside of extenuating circumstances, pepper spray is a non-lethal weapon.

Keep spinning it to make it look like the cops can do no wrong. They have no regard for anyone's life, only to imprison whomever they see and come up with some excuse for it. This cop will get a raise because we are in a police state. It's time to wake up.
