Re: Nice Planet 5: Insert Catchy Title Here

How bad are the parents that get their kids taken away if TRYING TO KILL THEM isn't on that list?

Back in my Houston days I interviewed representatives of a group dedicated to protecting kids removed from abusive homes. Well, actually, the kids had been removed, then placed back in those homes then killed. These folks wanted to stop that insanity. Seems like when a parent is accused of trying to kill a child, the state should err on the side of protecting the life of that child. Many of these people are "parents" only in the strictest biological sense (cue Keanu).

Re: Nice Planet 5: Insert Catchy Title Here

First it was WWII vets denied access to their memorial. Then Vietnam vets and others were denied access to The Wall (reports that visitors were threatened with arrest). Now it's the Iwo Jima Memorial. Mark Steyn calls the enforcers "shock troops of the punitive bureaucracy." Is this president capable of realizing how petty all of this is? And how unfitting for the Commander in Chief? Looks like some of the Honor Flight old boys took matters into their own hands, again.

Scroll down and notice the guys in wheel chairs at the memorial. These are the guys Obama wants to hassle? Shame on you, Mr. President.

Saw this pic with the caption:

WWII Memorial Closed? So was Normandy Beach.

Maybe I missed something. Is the government shut down or not?

Are you saying that this goes beyond the shutdown and is being done out of spite?

My understanding is that the shutdown is the reason that these places are closed. Do I have that wrong?

How is Obama "hassling" these guys?

Re: Nice Planet 5: Insert Catchy Title Here

If Obama is "hassling" our vets, then you're a conservative.

If the House is "hassling" our vets, then you're a liberal.

Nonsense. Congress has no authority or responsibility in posting guards to "protect" outdoor facilities that customarily don't require any "protection," but somehow magically do during this government "shutdown." Interestingly, in previous government "shutdowns" these facilities weren't closed. You've evidently missed the reports about the Honor Flight folks contacting the WH to remind those "public servants" about the scheduled tours by ancient vets. Apparently didn't matter to Neville and all the little Neville's. Maybe these elderly dudes were "collateral damage." The blame here rests entirely on Obama.

As to your first question, the answer is somewhat. About 85% of government spending is not involved. You're still getting your mail, I presume.

Yes. Exactly, spite with a capital "S." Neville is denying admittance to open air facilities, which are not customarily attended by parks department employees and haven't been closed in previous government "shutdowns." The WWII memorial is essentially a marble plaza in the middle of a park. No "entrances" or "exits." Same with the Iwo Jima memorial and the Vietnam Wall. In the case of the Iwo Jima memorial (which is a statue in the middle of a park also) they blocked access to the parking lots. Guys in their 90's in wheel chairs might find the walk a little daunting. Incidentally, they have tried to shut down Mount Vernon, which is run by a private entity.

The "shutdown" is the excuse given for "closing" facilities which are customarily open 24/7. It's actually costing taxpayers more to "close" these open air facilities since they customarily don't require any staffing but do in order to enforce Neville's diktat.

If you're unable (more likely unwilling) to see how denying (or attempting to deny) access to these memorials to 90-year old veterans constitutes hassling, then it's beyond my poor powers to explain it to you.

These men can't just "come back another time." Time is not something they have a lot of. This president is acting out of spite. The facts about this unnecessary "shutdown" of open air facilities are readily available and have been widely reported. Do you really not know the answers to those questions? Neville, at least in this instance, is acting with spite bordering on cruelty. Not to mention disrespect.

He has a D after his name so whatever he does is OK with them

Um, no.

If that's true, then it was/is the wrong thing to do.

Aren't these normally just public plazas with no gates or attendants?

Correct. Which is why it is such a clear political ploy that has nothing do to with the failure to fund any department. It takes more funding to put park police out there to set barricades and then man them then it would to leave as is.

Won't turn me conservative, but it's an arsehat move to be sure.

Or, you can read.

Or an idiot.

You guys are mostly right, but I'm saying that this is going to be the line of "thinking" from wingers on both sides.

It is exactly what our Dem governor did during our last shutdown in MN. Attempt to cause the maximum pain to the voters, it has nothing to do with saving money.

I don't believe that political stunts or causing maximum pain to voters is strictly a Dem thing.

Never said it was. But the last two shutdowns I have seen have had dems in the executive position and both have pulled this crap. While a number of years ago the reverse happened here in MN and our then R governor did none of this crap. That shutdown was run the way they should be run, minimizing both costs and pain to the citizens. Very small sample size but it is striking to me.

The most pertinent difference between what T-Paw did as governor during the shutdown and what Dayton and Obama have done can be found in their roots as people. T-Paw was a high school hockey player, and thus a better person than these other two. That's all there is to it.

Re: Nice Planet 5: Insert Catchy Title Here

While the whole "War on Christmas" hyperbole on Faux makes me point and laugh, this ticks me off...

http://www.channel3000.com/news/Choir-halts-practices-following-music-directive/-/1648/22315526/-/13rve67/-/index.html

I grew up a singer and was in chorus all through grade school. I was a really good singer and our program was excellent - had a great director. Same with the band - which my sister was in and was also excellent. Both went to local and national competitions and placed.

Each year we had a Christmas concert and a Spring concert. At the Christmas concert we performed -GASP- Christmas and other holiday/winter songs.

These concerts were part of the fabric that made up the holiday season, and not just for me or my family. Hundreds of people would be at them. We would take trips into Chicago to perform for holiday travelers/shoppers at places such as the Drake Hotel on the Magnificent Mile.

Listen to children's choirs doing Christmas songs and tell me that it doesn't feel right... pure, even.

My son was in chorus in 6th grade and we were treated to a December concert featuring Michael Jackson songs, poorly executed. Apparently, the director was a huge fan and didn't see any irony in children performing his songs.

Instead of being a pleasant part of the holiday season, this concert was awful and only reminded me of what's been lost in the 30 or so years since I was that age.

I may be liberal leaning, but I ****ing hate political correctness.

You meant to say "entirely" right didn't you? In this matter Neville bears 100% of the responsibility. This isn't a matter of spin. It's a matter of fact.
