Got to use it on the air one day in reporting on the Diane Whipple killing. Had to do with some polaroids found in the cell of the Aryan Nation type adopted by those two scumbag lawyers who owned the Presa Canerios. The con evidently photographed his "mother" while she was "playing" with one of those 140 pound beasts.

I remember seeing a show on them on Animal Planet a few years ago. Not too many animals scare me, but wasps and hornets can make me shriek like a girl - for which my wife points at me and laughs.

Having to be around these things would make life un-liveable (for me).

I'm not allergic, but I did have an allergic-type reaction to a sting once while golfing. Ended with an ambulance ride but I never actually went into shock. BP just dropped and face went numbish, broke out in a full body sweat - good times.

Been stung again with no reaction, so it was either a specific insect or just a bad day for the body.

Creepy little ****ers.

I think I have a nest in the attic....

The last several weeks there have been a bunch of wasps hanging out around my house, so I sat outside and watched them, trying to figure out where their nest is, so I could kill them. What I found was that they would go up to the peak of the roof, and crawl into a little gap between a piece of wood trim and the stucco. I'm not sure if the nest is just behind the trim, or if they found their way into the attic, I'm guessing they're in the attic. The attic is sealed, though, so they can't get from there into the house, but still, I'm considering sticking my head up there to check on it, and then having an exterminator come out if necessary.

One of the girls in my neighborhood was also in the same grade as me growing up. During my years in elementary school her dad used to come to the school once each year, all the while dressed in his uniform, his belt fully stocked with all that he'd normally carry, including his side arm, along with his K-9 partner. Kids were always wowed by the display they'd put on for all the grades.

It's a little funny to think back on it. There were seven of us from the neighborhood all in the same grade, and I think we all had a very different outlook on the German Sheperd than the rest of the class. We were wowed by the various routines my neighbor would have the dog execute, but we saw the animal outside of school and knew how careful everyone had to be around it and heard a few stories of the things it had to do while in service. Still, never once were we overly nervous around the animal because we knew Officer Steve (not you, SteveP ;) ) had good control over her - though not 100% control, as he told us repeatedly, because she was, after all, still a dog.

She was always leashed except for when the drugs would come out for her to track down. Once she caught scent of the drugs, there was nothing else in the world that registered to her until she found the hidden stash and Office Steve had it in his hands.

As a general rule, the more guys in uniform around a school (even for a brief moment) the safer the kids are. A good friend of mine, who fought in Vietnam, became a cop for our suburb. Several years ago Tommy chased a punk back in to Chicago and wound up killing him when the guy jumped out of his car preparing to fire. The more people like my friend Tommy, the safer we'll all be.
