Credit cards are actually VERY secure for payment because the consumer cannot be held liable for fraudulent charges. You notice bogus charges on your card, you call your credit card company and notify them they're fraudulent, that's it, you're off the hook for the charges (I think the max they can hold you liable for is $50.)

Imagine if they got a hold of, say, your debit card. They could clean you out and there's nothing you can do.

It's why I don't have a debit card. ;)

There's a reason why God made doctors you *******s!!

but if god didn't want them to die they wouldn't have gotten sick. Anyone that uses modern medicine obviously is not a true believer and is trying to play god.

Depends on the card. A couple years back, I got a phone call from my bank that they had noticed some activity in Florida that did not make sense, given that I had activity in Michigan on the same day. Well, they were right, someone had gotten a hold of my numbers and made a few Internet purchases that totalled about a $100. Bank refunded me the money, shut down the card, and immediately sent me a new one. They conducted a perfunctory investigation and about a month later sent me a letter confirming I would not be held responsible for the deductions from my checking account.

Exactly. Just because they are not legally obligated to do so doesn't mean your bank will not make any effort to help. For debit cards, you are only responsible for the entire value of your account if it takes you 60 days or longer to notice.

<a href="http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0213-lost-or-stolen-credit-atm-and-debit-cards">More on FCBA and EFTA</a> from the FTC, which is a pretty good source. ;)

I had a similar experience. And was greatly impressed when the lady I was dealing with said (paraphrasing): "Restoring your funds is our first priority," (which oddly enough was my first priority).

I'm guessing that in the wake of all the ID theft that has cropped up in the past decade, a majority of banks figured out pretty quickly that not offering some measure of account monitoring and refusing to reimburse customers for fraudulent debit card transactions is bad for business. Once one major player did it, most of them probably followed suit in that zero-sum game - just like how every airline, cruise line, major retailer, and restaurant chain has a rewards card/program now.

I once bought a PS3, wheel, and Gran Turismo 5 for Christmas off of Amazon using my card.

Two days later, I went to buy gas and the card was rejected. I called my credit union to ask double you tee eff, and they had flagged it to be blocked because of the purchases. Never even called me, just blocked the card.

They're darned sensitive about this sort of stuff.

I would guess these decisions (at least initially) are made by "the computer." Given the hundreds of millions of cards out there and the billions of transactions, I don't see how it could be done any other way.

My bank told me they'd just charge back the companies that accepted the card. Easy peasy

Bet on it. In fact, God wanted that child to die, it was "His will".

What a bunch of loons. Hope they get the max this time.

My father, Dr. Pio, had a surefire technique for dealing with these types. As a cardio-thoracic surgeon he'd occasionally be called to the ER to consult and possibly operate on accident victims. When confronted with one of these "I don't believe in medicine" types he'd turn to nobody in particular and say in a very loud voice: "Get this dead person out of here." He said in terms of getting them to see the light, it was 100% successful.

I only had one hack attempt. Wells Fargo called me, asked if I had travelled lately. It was during hockey season, so yeah, duh. They asked where. I said Houghton, CO Springs, and Denver. They paused, and said (and I quote), "Uh.....no." Had to reset everything (passwords, etc). Thankfully, the attempt was not successful. WF was very thorough, and I am thankful for it.
