Valedictorian is denied diploma for using the word "hell" in her speech.

First Amendment indeed.
On the one hand, I hope she realizes that the physical diploma is the least important thing on Earth and tells the administration to stuff it. On the other hand, I hope she realizes that you can apologize insincerely to idiots without really damaging your self-respect, and gets her diploma.

Although I guess ultimately the best solution is for some national media outlet to pick up the story, and shame the idiots into doing the right thing.

On one hand, the school is definitely overreacting. On the other hand, she did have to submit a draft for approval, and I think it's fair to say she clearly used 'heck' so that it would get through the administrative process, which was deceptive. A little white lie, but a lie nonetheless.

A closed-door apology to the principal and superintendent should've been more than enough for her to walk out of there with her diploma. Far worse happened at my high school one year, when a group of graduating seniors got drunk and showed up late one night with eggs, spraypaint, superglue, and porn, and proceded to trash parts of the place. To get their diplomas and avoid vandalism charges they had to clean-up the mess, and probably chip in a large donation to the annual fund (which their parents likely paid ).

Re: Nice Planet 2012

Hummus is great. I would love if that was a concession option everywhere. However, I also enjoy coke and hot dogs.
I enjoy hummus as much as the next guy, but I don't think people should be getting them at high school football games. Maybe under the bleachers or in the parking lot.

Haven't courts ruled in other, similar, cases involving student "rights" that in fact, they don't have the same rights as adults? I'm thinking of warrantless searches of lockers and the editorial contents of student newspapers. In the latter, students have no financial interest in the papers. If they want First Amendment rights, they should set up their own paper, sell advertising and peddle it on street corners.

The bracelets are vulgar, that's why the wording was chosen, and no amount of pious argumentation can change that. But bracelets are different from Tees. Right? Schools regularly enforce dress and grooming codes, but I'm not convinced this issue requires that. The school's reaction strikes me as unnecessaary. It's altogether another topic to think about a full federal appeals court taking the time and spending the money to adjudicate this trivial business.

I agree that they are on the mild end of vulgar. But my beef is the same as with the "Save the tatas" bumperstickers. Breast cancer research is needed not to save the tatas or the boobies, but the women who are being attacked by cancer.

Agree. My sister in law is a 15 year survivor.

Those stickers/shirts/etc. don't actually mean that people care about boobs more than the person they're attached to....I thought that was obvious. If this is raising moneyfor the cause, it is a tool that should be used as much as possible.

Yes, it IS obvious. I just disagree with the verbiage.

Re: Nice Planet 2012

I suppose when you're the world's most famous single guy, trying to escape the cameras by taking the family yacht out for a booze cruise gets boring after awhile. :p

I'd imagine checking the paper every morning to see if three generations of your family were wiped out overnight gets a little old. How'd you like to be known as "the spare?" He gives the impression of being a regular guy. Served in combat. Didn't want to leave his men. He's okay in my book. Besides, Grandmama gave up the really great yacht a few years ago. 6,000 tons worth. :)
