Re: Nice Planet 2012

Your links would appear to prove a point you didn't make. You said busiest shopping days. Black Friday is the busiest, and it's not close.

It should also be noted that returns are much higher on Black Friday as well, which affects over all sales...but, what would I know? I only managed the checklanes...

I'd be curious as to what actual numbers are being cited in those sources... Although there is a definite spike in the last 2 weekends before Christmas, they don't approach BF for us... They are usually about 30% off... In fact, our store has only hit $200K in sales on BF and on the day after the Blackhawks won the Cup in June 2010... Every other day has been in the $100k's...

Profits, maybe? I know we had much more staffing on BF than Saturdays during the holiday season...

At how many stores? In how many cities? In how many states? Seems to me you're taking this personally. Why? Does it really matter, one way or another? My initial post was intended primarily to criticize the morons who inhabit local TV newsrooms.

BF is certainly a big day. Maybe the biggest in some stores (Target, for instance) and maybe the biggest nationaly in some years. But it's no longer the hands down, automatic, biggest day of the year. That doesn't stop unimaginative TV assignment editors, who continue to crank out the same cliche stories year after year. Which was really my point.

Re: Nice Planet 2012

Depends on the job.... Here in Illinois, assaulting a sports official can result in a felony... It's not 100%, but it's not a 2% thing either... I know that a gentleman that my baseball official's organization has had problems with in the past ended up with a felony on his record for getting physical with an official... As with most things however, different states = different laws... Not sure what FL offers as far a special protection for officials...

Well, that's a good thing. And we need more of that, no doubt. However, my point still stands: you don't see as much of this stuff from high school coaches. Obviously education, professionalism and experience plays a role. But so does the prospect of losing a job, and much more. This thug's job on the loading dock was almost certainly not jeopardized by this incident.

Most of these volunteer age group coaches do a fine job. Probably the overwhelming majority. Some, however, apparantly have such low self-esteem they think what little boys accomplish on the playing field reflects on their worth as humans. And they should be cut from the herd.

2 stores in 2 states.

I ask again: why do you seem to be taking this so personally? Your experience is your experience. But may not be representative of the whole nation. What difference does it make, anyway? There are plenty of good sources who say BF is no longer the automatic busiest day of the year. So what?

Re: Nice Planet 2012

Love the story, but why qualify her race? Honest question.

Because I'm a racist? Or because annecdotally it seems like mouthy, out of control African American b*tches are waaaay over-represented in these kinds of incidents?

Who's taking this personally? My experience goes beyond what I've worked. It extends to stories from family, friends, and co-workers who live in and moved from other states. Black Friday may not make the most total money, but stores everywhere are more busy on that day than any other.

EDIT: Agree on the cliche stories...I hate those...

Re: Nice Planet 2012

From the comments it looks like the play is back on for 12/7,8,9. Sorry, but 12/8 is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics - can't hold it on that day! (sarcasm).

In 5th or 6th grade I remember watching out the window on a Holy Day of Obligation, as the kids from St. Giles went to Taylor park to get their sleds blessed.

[waves white flag] "Stories from my family, friends and co-workers" clearly settles this.

Re: Nice Planet 2012

THAT's F*KING EPIC!!!!

Good for the bus driver. You don't punch and spit on someone and not expect retaliation.

Think about being a bus driver these days in a big American city. You've got no place to hide. You pretty much have to let passengers get on. Passengers who may be demented, psychotic, drunk, high, armed and looking for trouble. Bus drivers probably have emergency communications of some sort. But that can come way too late when some guy with a knife, hearing the voices, hops on. This is one case where this guy's union will rightfully go to bat for him. As I say, keep your hands to yourself, dear.

Good question. I guess you could rule out explicit racism, as the over-reacting bus driver (who is also black) escaped mention. When I saw he was linking to that story, I thought for sure he would have given the Nice Planet treatment to him and referred to him as a "driver" in the same way that Johnny Lewis was an "actor", and all the people reporting on Black Friday are "reporters" and how I'm a "poster", etc.
