I agree with dx. Yep, said it. When someone is obviously disturbed/on drugs, you take no chances. Be thankful she wasn't shot (yes, I'm serious).

I side with the cops 90% of the time, having heard many a story from cops (and my uncle being one). It's not an easy job, not at all.

I'm going with what was presented in the story, along with experiences relayed by cops. On the surface, I'd agree, but something tells me otherwise. Just a feeling. What would the response be if they didn't tase her, and she started hitting the cops, and a cop was injured? Or worse yet, she somehow had a hidden firearm (we've read about stranger circumstances)?

She's 80. Naked (no place to conceal a weapon). And she requires a cane to be ambulatory. All of the doomsday annecdotes in the world won't change those facts. Big, burly, weight lifting cops afraid of a naked old lady? Please.

Just saying that it's better to be safe than sorry. My opinion. Nothing more than that.

Just imagining what an 80 year old lady looks like naked makes me very afraid. I see the reasoning. She probably has about a 6 foot "reach" if she really starts swinging those things around.

Ah, now you're jumping ahead. If and only if the tasers do not work, then yes. But one must follow the regulations, and "safety procedures." Tase first. THEN if that doesn't work, move on to the next step. I will not fall on your slippery slope. :P

Having been there & done that, I can say that it does seem a little over the top. Of course, I'm from the era when we carried an 18" truncheon and a six-shot revolver and nothing else. When it came to dealing with wackos, we tended to think more out of the box.

Quick thinking. The flip side of this episode, IIRC, happened in Florida a few years back when a first grader was having a tantrum in the school office and a roomful of teachers had no idea what to do. So, they called the cops. And the little girl was taken away in cuffs. She probably came this close to being tasered. Don't remember whether they took the rubber hose to her back at the station. Or if they gave her the Abner Louima treatment.

Yeah, She could have a couple of skin folds or some saggy boobs that would make it pretty easy to tuck a weapon into them to hide them. Perhaps a Wizard's sleeve even?? Yeah.....
