Re: Nice Planet 2011

Disturbing the peace. Unlawful assembly (did they obtain the proper permits?). Disobeying a police officer.

Yeah, I'd say they were asking for it.

I think I agree. But why does that puke O'Donnell have to claim that what happened to Rodney King happens "every day" in America? . Why is it necessary to smear every police department and by extension every cop, because NYPD mussed up the hairdos of some folks? Certainly even a libtard hysteric like O'Donnell can't seriously equate what happened to King with what's on those tapes . I didn't see any serial clubbing, did you? Definitely into apple/orange territory here.

No, Rodney King was about an 8 out of 10 for Police Brutality. Maybe 9. Let's normalize the scale for Rodney King as a 10. If a completely lawful, peaceful, and uneventful speeding ticket is a 1, this would have been a 3 or 4.

Edit: I'm not a big fan of a lot of what O'Donnell says, but I respect the guy. I think he does a lot better than most partisans out there. Right or left. I think he's honest the vast majority of the time. Unlike Ed or Rachel. I don't respect Ed at all. Rachel I tolerate but even if she wasn't a political commentator, I would still consider her an annoying b*tch. Oh she's insufferable.

While I agree the King case was excessive, it wasn't a 9 or 10. Remember, that wasn't the whole video that was on the news.

Right, I said it was probably an 8 out of 10. It was still excessive. Even with the rest of the footage included.

Even 8 is kind of a harsh grade. 6-7, maybe. I have a few cops in my family, so yes that makes me biased, but on the other hand, I hear some stories of extreme cases, like this one, where there is much more than we will ever know.

And when I first saw the vid, I uttered "Fry the cops." Then I learned more about the situation.

It doesn't matter what's on the tape, unless those cops were claiming he went after them with a weapon. In which case they would have been justified in shooting him. They were certainly justified in using force, taser, baton, whatever, because he was non compliant. But they had him face down on the ground. Flopping around like a halibut. And they kept hitting him. LAPD officers surrounded by LASO deputies. All somebody had to do was put a knee on King's neck while someone else cuffed him. Somewhere they lost their justification for applying force and turned it into an a*s kicking. Tenth baton strike? Twentieth? Thirtieth? Fortieth? Fiftieth? Cops don't get to punish a guy that severely because they "don't like his attitude." They can apply the force necessary to bring him under control. And they gave away the game afterwards with their text messages talking about "gorillas in the mist," etc. That was a very ugly incident and IMHO, the cops were guilty of. . .something. Besides, old Rodney was dusted.

Establishing a scale for these cases is interesting. Let's say we're talking about non-fatal cases. I think I'd put Abner Louima as a ten and work my way down. Rodney King, on my scale, would be in the 6-7 range.

I agree that Rodney should have been subdued, and I feel dirty and shameful, and a horrid person, but Ed Norton almost had me. Almost.

Starting at 1:35 mark. Awesome movie, btw. Really makes you think.

I've always liked Edward Norton. What was that flick he was in with Richard Gere where he played a cunning little psycho who murdered a Cardinal? Anyway, to the specifics of his rant, remember in the trial of the officers who beat King an instructor at the LAPD academy testified the cops didn't use standard techniques and exceeded what the threat was to them. He pulls a gun or a knife, I say drop him like a bad habit. But whacking him 'till you run out of breath is another matter.

Edit: "Primal Fear"

And from the stories I heard, about the drugs, few people really understood. He was either a mangod that was unstoppable, or a pure beatdown guy.

Angel dust and a thick skull. And in the cops' defense, the other guy in the car with King was arrested without incident, not touched. IMO, they just crossed the line. The ranking person out there should have wrapped it up. Even the most legitimate application of force by police "looks" bad.

I wish we knew the true facts. It's sad. :(

A buddy of mine grew up to be an officer in our Chicago 'burb. On one occasion he pursued an armed robber into Chicago. At some point the dude's car gave up the ghost and he came out with a gun. Tommy dropped him. Good police work, nothing more. But it might have looked bad to people who didn't have all the facts.

I agree. But let's give the devil his due: PETA and that crazy b*tch Newkirk who runs it, are masters at earned media. They're always coming up with some stunt that lures local (and sometimes national) media. When they called my newsroom for "coverage," I'd tell them we wouldn't be there. Unless somebody driving by stopped his car and beat the living sh*t out of the lesbian in the carrot suit. In that case, we'd be right over.
