There's a pic in the links that basically shows him with his knee in the dog's back in position like he's subduing a suspect. That dog wasn't going anywhere.

I saw the link, didn't care to see the picture. It would just **** me off even more.

If it was my dog, the cop would have ended up shooting me because I'd have probably gone after him. I'm no PETA supporter, but unprovoked violence against animals is one of my triggers. Boils my blood.

It's heart-breaking when a beloved pet dies violently.

Perhaps that explains the ridiculousness of the MPD-bashing here.

It's exasperating to have to make the point that, from an officer's point of view, hearing a report of a pit bull that attacked another dog (evidently without provocation) in a massive crowd and that appears to be biting someone (and remember, there is no way the officer could have known that the owner pulling the dog's jaws apart was an attempt to calm the dog down, rather than the dog attacking a person) is a nightmare scenario that calls for quick, decisive action.

Let's imagine a different headline: "Pit-bull mauls toddler to death at Adams Morgan Festival." And let's imagine the lead of the story is "A two year old pit bull mauled a 6 month old boy to death at the Adams Morgan Festival after an MPD officer decided to stand by as the dog first attacked another dog, then bit an adult trying to calm the dog down before mauling the child. The dog's owner had cared for the dog for less than a month and admitted the dog in the past had gotten sufficiently overexcited to require being physically subdued. "

As in all professions, some cops are awesome, some are horrible, and most are somewhere in between. Cops aren't super-human and--newsflash--sometimes they don't handle situations perfectly.

I know nothing about the officer involved beyond what is reported here. Until I learn more, I'll reserve judgment

And given that I have and have had cop family members, I know this. And what he did was over the top. Way over the top.

that is a terrible story. i lived with a pitbull for over 4 years, so i have tremendous sympathy to the overreactions the public has to their presence.

that said, how about some accountability for this owner who has the dog for less than a month and is parading it around at a public festival? come on, dude. that is not smart for a dog that may or may not be properly socialized.

and i dont see how the dog can be biting other dogs if it was properly harnessed?

I believe tasing the dog would mean he'd have to release control of the dog...into a crowd of people.
