The First Amendment survives a close call at a northern California mall. Read the article, you won't believe what these twerps were up to.

Under this rule if I'm strolling the mall and see someone wearing a UND jersey, I'm prohibited from chatting him up about college hockey. How could they possibly think this rule would strand up to judicial review? I especially like the part about getting "permission" to talk to a stranger three days in advance. Are you chitting me?

There is a very easy solution to the problem they are trying to address. A "No Solicitation" policy.

Airports had the problem of Hare Krishna wing nuts a few years ago wandering around, buttonholing unsuspecting travelers. They solved it by requiring those bung holes to stay in assigned areas.

I remember walking by the USO lounge at O'Hare years ago and seeing dozens of copies of their religious writings laying around after they'd conned unsuspecting GI's into giving them a donation for the "free" book.

One time in St. Louis the minor league football team I was traveling with was killing time very early in the morning waiting for our flight to San Antonio. The smallest guy on the team saw a stash of Krishna books and had us all in stitches imitating their schtick while we howled in the departure lounge. Wouldn't you know it, a couple of Krishnas came along and got all up in this guy's face. They didn't realize the circumstances, of course, but got the message when a DE known as Sasquatch (think Hacksaw Jim Duggan) came up behind them and asked if they really wanted to break bad. Turns out they didn't. Hmmmm.

Secondary "Nice Planet" award goes to how the Sherriff talked about the situation the mother was experiencing in such a way as to promote sympathy or even justify such actions.

She didn't know where to turn? She could take care of them? She just wanted to "get rid of them?"

Sorry, this is plain old, run of the mill, every day PREMEDITATED MURDER.

And she killed 2 of them! Good news! DEATH PENALTY gets another one!

Oooh! South Carolina is a choice state! She can choose lethal injection or electrocution. Too bad "Strangulation and sunk in an AMC Gremlin" isn't an option.

Yeah, I left that reaction out of my rant. What is this doofus, a social worker, a defense lawyer? It's not like there was no help available, from multiple sources. 'Course you can never find a condom when you want one.

South African police have confirmed to the BBC that they are investigating a possible syndicate that has been hiring out children from creches to beggars.

It follows a general crackdown on the use of children to beg in the capital, Pretoria.

Twenty children were taken into care after an operation on Friday; 13 have since been returned to their families.

An investigation by Johannesburg's 702 Talk Radio found that some parents and child-minders were renting out babies to beggars for about 20 rand (about $3; £2) a day.

I just don't get it... I mean, it's hilarious when you first see it because you think it's a joke. But then you realize this woman just threw a cat in the garbage, a living cat, and then walked away. It makes me a little sick to my stomach.
