On a different note. I went by the local outfitter today to get some live mealworms for the birds, particularly Robins, which have had to deal with cold and deep snow for the last couple of weeks. Just a couple of weeks ago we must have had 50 or more Robins in our yard going through the grass for worms. All that changed drastically, to the point where I noticed Robins hanging around my car, drinking ice melt by the tires. The guy at the store said they were out of worms--that there had been a rush of people buying mealworms and seed for the birds.

Well, to be fair, there were positive aspects of slavery just not for the slaves. If the assignment had been asking about THAT then it is no big deal. Since the assignment appeared to be about the slaves themselves then the teacher is just an efing moron ;)

They could have just asked who benefitted from slavery. That doesn’t seem controversial

It wouldn't seem so, however, anything less than "slavery was the worst thing ever" will raise some eyebrows of someone looking to complain. Slaves helped build this country, and it sucks royally that they were forced to do it, under harsh treatment, for hundreds of years. So, I guess the country overall benefited along with the rich white racists.
