NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

Re: NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

The "why" is tradition, but it's inevitable this will go down according to ownership's (cough short-sighted) whims like the Natinals (the fans wanted Senators 3.0). The Moose name is way too cutesy, though the colors at least are nice.

There is only one option then:

Winnitoba Moosejets.

(Think I can get that trending on Twitter?)

Re: NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

So, who let the writers of Major League come up with a story about hockey ownership in Atlanta? Hell, I have to imagine that Stern is praying they do unload the arena and basketball team as well.

Re: NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

Pretty darn fired up today! As I noted when I started this thread, I live 4 hours from St. Paul and 4 hours from Winnipeg. I have no real connection to the Wild at this point, and while I grew up outside Chicago, I didn't follow the Blackhawks (or hockey in general) until I was in high school. Looks like I get a new team to call my own as of today...

The fans wanted...would those be the same fans that couldnt support the previous 2 versions of the Senators? You dont take the name of a twice failed franchise as your own the idea is ludicrous.

As for the Moose...I remember going to Minnesota Moose games :(

I lived in the Cities post-Stars, pre-Wild and the Moose were...okay. You are the first person I can think of who is nostalgic/lamenting losing that team.

Re: NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

The 'Moose' thing is alright I guess, in a "Well, ownership seems bound to stick them with it anyway, so whatever" kind of way. That looney tooney AHL logo has got to go though (sorry aparch).

Re: NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

Huh. So looks like the Coyotes don't get back to Winnipeg, as the Thrashers are beating them to the punch. I have to say, it would have been pretty amazing for Shane Doan to end up back in Winnipeg after starting out there and then spending 14+ years with the franchise here in Phoenix.

Ha. I just think that this logo isn't much different than the SJ Shark logo or the FLA Panther logo. You could easily wipe the smirk off the moose like this.

Re: NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

You're right, it's not as bad as I remembered. That new concept is OK. I like the shoulder patch nod to the Jets to placate the fans slightly.

Either someone forgot to dot the t's and cross the i's, or the NHL-Network US version sucks at simulcasting a video feed from Winnipeg.

*edit* Apparently they had to wake up the on-air talent from their naps. NHLNet-US is now talking about the original move from and the current move to WPG.

This is why TSN.ca > USA networks.

These prices are reasonable. If I had the chance, I'd be scraping some money together to jump at this.

E-Mail from the Atlanta Spirit Group:
May 31, 2011

Earlier today, we, along with our partners, signed an asset purchase agreement to sell the Atlanta Thrashers to True North Sports and Entertainment. If ratified by the NHL, Commissioner Bettman and the league's Board of Governors, this will result in the relocation of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg, Canada beginning with the 2011-2012 season.

It's extremely disappointing to all of us that it became necessary after all other options were exhausted. We want to express my gratitude to you, the fans, for the years of dedication you have offered to the Atlanta Thrashers.

As many of you know, for some time we have been seeking a buyer for the team or a partner willing to join with us in continuing to fund the team. We hired an investment banking firm to seek out potential investors with the express goal of finding someone who would keep the team here in Atlanta. In recent months, we openly indicated a growing urgency to secure assistance in off-setting our operating losses in hopes that our public plea would produce investors which, to that point, had eluded us.

After extensive effort, nobody has come forward. As a result, we had no choice but to explore the investment option presented to us by the NHL in the form of True North Sports and Entertainment.

Relocation of the Thrashers is not the outcome that any of us ultimately wanted. We knew when we purchased the club in 2004, that professional sports teams are seldom, if ever, money-making investments but rather vital community assets. We believed in the overall impact that the team had on the sports landscape of Atlanta, and over the past seven years, invested a significant amount of money into what we felt was an integral piece of the greater metropolitan Atlanta area. We are truly grateful to have been a part of this city's professional hockey history, to have made an indelible impact on the community through our players' outreach, our organization's activities and our foundation's donations, and most of all, to have been a part of paying tribute to you, our fans, each and every time our team stepped on the ice.

Thank you for the opportunity to be entertained, thrilled and inspired alongside you by Atlanta Thrashers hockey. None of this would have been possible without your support.

Sincerely,

Bruce Levenson and Michael Gearon

Yeah, I think its a nice touch. Hell, I guess if they ever really wanted to, like if they get a Heritage Classic game, they could always done some retro Jets jerseys, and then sell the knockoffs thru the next year or two to the local collectors there. That might be something 4 or 5 years down the pipeline, but if they go with the Moose, they'll always have the option of doing the oddball Jets jersey night. They go with the Jets now, then there's no Moose Jersey night.

If I were starting a new professional sports brand, I know that re-using a minor league franchise name would be high up on my list of priorities. :)

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but, don't the Coyotes still own the rights to the "Winnipeg Jets"?

The NHL does.

Re: NHL hockey returns to the 'Peg! Maybe?

And didn't I hear a report today saying that the NHL was prepared to "give" the name back to Winnipeg if they wanted it? If nothing else, I would imagine TNSE would want the right to sell Jets stuff in the team store and reserve the right to use the logo for 3rd jersey/throwback games.

The NHL is a Non-profit? Does that mean it's just a container and the franchises are the corporations?
