NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

Hate to say it, but there's nothing "professional" about this league as it sits. It's just another minor hockey league. Sad....very sad.

The fact that these players are not getting paid just makes me admire them and respect their committment to making this work that much more. I hope someday there is a team here in the midwest (Ohio, maybe) so I don't have to drive six hours to see them play. Until that happens, though, I'll make the road trips.

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

I have to say that I have been to a few games this season, and the hockey has been very good. It's fast and physical, and very entertaining. I look forward to seeing much more..

Mrs 86 and I have only been to a couple games, but I agree with you wholeheartedly ... very good hockey, very entertaining. We are going up again in January for Mrs 86's birthday. We are going to the Toronto vs Brampton game on 1/22 (Mrs 86's b-day is 1/23) ... 59 days and counting!!!

Wow, glad I decided to check the schedule. The game has been moved to Friday 1/21 and it is not at the Mastercard Centre. But anyway, that's when we are going. Guess that countdown is now at 58 days.

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

Well, my prediction is now come to fruition. Any other news out there??

One month after stepping down as assistant coach of the Brantford Blast, Paris District High School teacher Pete Crosby has added a new job title to his hockey résumé.

While he stayed on as assistant general manager of the Blast, Crosby was named the interim head coach of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League's Brampton Thunder late last week.

The new job came after the team’s head coach, recent Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Angela James, stepped down.

“(Angela) felt she didn’t have the time to commit to a program like this,” Crosby said. “She is being torn in a million different directions. She is not just representing the Hockey Hall of Fame, she is representing women’s hockey.”

James was the first-ever female player to be inducted into the hall of fame. Crosby said the responsibilities that came with the honour have made it difficult for her to find time for the team.

Crosby, who has previous CWHL coaching experience with the Mississauga Chiefs, signed on with the Brampton team as a video analyst this season.

Earlier this year, he stepped in as head coach while James was away.

“I’m drawn to (coaching),” Crosby said. “The league is very different to what it was two years ago. For all intents and purposes, it is a professional league. The expectations are incredibly high. You feel like you’re really part of something.

“I was comfortable with (video analysis), but as I got to know this group I saw their passion. It’s infectious. It’s a big drawing card.”

The Thunder are currently in third place in the five-team league and Crosby said his first challenge would be to implement new systems to ensure players were working toward the same goal.

While he knows the new position will be a challenge, Crosby said he's excited at the opportunity to work with high-calibre players, including several Olympic medallists.

“Sure it’s daunting,” he said. “These women are the best in the world, so the daunting part is knowing the responsibility and knowing what they expect from their coach.

“The draw is the quality of players. These players approach the game with great intensity, great passion and great desire.”

For a posistive the Brampton/Montreal game in Kingston drew 600 people...that would be good in Tier 2 Jr.

I had heard months ago that James was raising a ruckus and threatening to quit when it became clear that the promise of a $10000 salary for coaching would not be fulfilled. Now she's made good on her word.

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

We just returned to Ohio last night from the Toronto vs Brampton game yesterday in St. Catharines. It was held at the arena where the Niagara Icedogs play. Great place to see a game. Old-school arena (I think the name is Jack Gatecliff Arena). Brampton got a couple empty netters late that made the score look worse at 5-2. It was really a tightly contested game. Toronto is getting better. They are in the midst of a losing streak and are probably a little frustrated. The downside was that it was an outreach game and the attendance in the boxscore was listed at 50. We decided to go to this one since St. Catharines is a little closer drive for us than the GTA. We drove up and back the same day. We're still planning our January trip for Mrs 86's birthday in another month. Hope this league survives as the hockey is getting better now that the teams have had a number of practices and have been playing together for a couple months.

That may be what happened and certainly, fans have plenty of choices when it comes to seeing a hockey game on a Saturday afternoon/evening in that area. Despite the small crowd, we still had a great time, and are already looking forward to our next trip up there!

It's too bad the league didnt have more supporters like yourself! Have a great Christmas ... and drive carefully!

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

Thanks Seymore! You have a wonderful Christmas yourself and a happy new year! And that goes for all of you on this thread! As for the driving part, thanks for your concern. One of the players told me that (drive carefully) and also to stop and take naps if I get tired. I think I had four big cups of gas station coffee and was back in Ohio. Plus, Mrs. 86 does a pretty good job of keeping me awake on those long road trips. Thanks, too, for the kind words about our support for the CWHL. Wish we could get up there more often.

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

It would be nice if they added a team in Western New York. Rochester could always use another sports team.

Hey, why stop at NY (LOL)? How about a team in Erie, PA, maybe even one in Ohio? I know I am getting a little ahead of myself there and I will be the first to admit I would like a closer drive to see these games, but the team knows we have been to a few games and they really appreciate that a couple of fans drive up from Ohio for their games. The hockey really is entertaining and fast-paced, and the play has gotten a lot sharper.

If I had the time and money, and wasn't in school, I'd travel to the Toronto games occasionally. If there was a team in Rochester I'd go to that when games didn't interfere with either of the programs at RIT.

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

The CWHL actually has passes they sell for $50 that get you into any game and that includes the Clarkson Cup. If we lived in the GTA or someplace closer, I would be all over that. It's really a great deal if you can get to a lot of the games. The first couple games we went to the admission was $5, but oddly enough, the admission at the outreach game in St. Catharines last weekend was $10 per person. We thought that was a little strange for an outreach game.

Now I really wish there was a team or two closer to me.

The team really appreciates when we are there. I tweeted a picture we had taken the other day and they retweeted something like "Love it ... and they drove all the way up from Ohio to see us play." Of course, when there are only 50 people at the game, it's not hard to see who is showing up. That is one thing I have always enjoyed about women's sports is the appreciation the girls have for their fans. They don't draw like their male counterparts, so they really appreciate you being there to support them. They certainly do not take their fans for granted, that's for sure!

Agent 86, are you a paid (well maybe not) PR person for the league or what, because this all seems a little weird? If you aren't, then you should be.:)

LOL, nah, not a paid PR person for the league, but wow, that would be a very interesting career change for me considering I am a tech support person for a software company! Am I a little weird? Ok, maybe just a little (haha)! Really, I just enjoy women's hockey (like the men's game, too, and am a big OSU & CBJ fan, not to mention my wife's alma mater, BGSU), and yes, I will admit, I just might have gotten bitten by the Olympic bug when it comes to women's hockey! Mrs 86 has become as big a fan as me and actually wants to go up to another CWHL game for her birthday next month. When we first went up, well, admittedly, it was about me (just ask Mrs 86) and my former Buckeye players. I also had an opportunity to have several Olympians sign my CTV Olympic DVD. What happened was Mrs 86 ended up having a great time watching the games and interacting with the players afterward, so she wanted to go back for more! As for the PR position, I did major in journalism so I could probably write some good stories for the CWHL website or the newspapers, but if we were going to relocate to the GTA, it would need to be a paid position (LOL)! It's funny, because both the companies Mrs 86 and I work for have offices in the GTA and we are always joking about getting transferred. It's kind of tough getting around up there (huge city, and yes, we got lost a couple times back in October up there), but hey, we just got a GPS for Christmas, so I think we could handle it now! Also, blame it on my alma mater's women's hockey program ... Ohio State had four girls in the Olympics and all four got medals. One other thing, there are five former Buckeyes playing in the CWHL. If we hit a Brampton vs Toronto game, we get to see four of them. The other former Buckeye plays for Burlington. We definitely have a rooting interest in this league, especially when it comes to the three teams in the GTA. Hey, before I go, Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to you, CanHockGuy, and all my wonderful USCHO friends in Canada and here in the USA! It's so cool to have a forum where everyone is talking hockey 24/7/365. :D

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

The Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs have announced partnerships with Alberta and Toronto of the CWHL (respectively).

Team Alberta will scrap this blue nonsense and go with a proper colour: red.
