Well, my prediction is now come to fruition. Any other news out there??
One month after stepping down as assistant coach of the Brantford Blast, Paris District High School teacher Pete Crosby has added a new job title to his hockey résumé.
While he stayed on as assistant general manager of the Blast, Crosby was named the interim head coach of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League's Brampton Thunder late last week.
The new job came after the team’s head coach, recent Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Angela James, stepped down.
“(Angela) felt she didn’t have the time to commit to a program like this,” Crosby said. “She is being torn in a million different directions. She is not just representing the Hockey Hall of Fame, she is representing women’s hockey.”
James was the first-ever female player to be inducted into the hall of fame. Crosby said the responsibilities that came with the honour have made it difficult for her to find time for the team.
Crosby, who has previous CWHL coaching experience with the Mississauga Chiefs, signed on with the Brampton team as a video analyst this season.
Earlier this year, he stepped in as head coach while James was away.
“I’m drawn to (coaching),” Crosby said. “The league is very different to what it was two years ago. For all intents and purposes, it is a professional league. The expectations are incredibly high. You feel like you’re really part of something.
“I was comfortable with (video analysis), but as I got to know this group I saw their passion. It’s infectious. It’s a big drawing card.”
The Thunder are currently in third place in the five-team league and Crosby said his first challenge would be to implement new systems to ensure players were working toward the same goal.
While he knows the new position will be a challenge, Crosby said he's excited at the opportunity to work with high-calibre players, including several Olympic medallists.
“Sure it’s daunting,” he said. “These women are the best in the world, so the daunting part is knowing the responsibility and knowing what they expect from their coach.
“The draw is the quality of players. These players approach the game with great intensity, great passion and great desire.”
