NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

Does anyone know if the players have been paid in previous years in the CWHL and approximatley how much? Curious.

They were paid zilch! As a matter of fact, they were required to get sponsors, then they had to cover ALL their expenses in addition to sponsors...including buses, food, hotels, etc etc, etc...it was just like being back in minor hockey...!!!

Doomed!!

C'mon Seymore...you mean to tell me none of these girls in the CWHL ever got paid? Not even a stipend? I thought this was a "professional" league?

Up until this year (and that has yet to be determined) they WERE NOT paid. As a matter of fact, that's why my D quit...she couldn't afford to fork out $$$ week in and week out. I'm telling you, it was just like minor hockey...and it was run by the same OWHA mentality. In it's format last year, it would not have survived.

We'll see how the new format works...the jury is still out, but I heard they will be getting something like $25 a game. (Not gonna be able to pay the bills with that.)

The $25 per game will actually be per diem. And yes, National Team players were still collecting their stipend from Hockey Canada. I mean after all, isn't this the league "Where the Elite Compete"??

As long as the Nat team, players had a place to play, that was all that mattered!

Anyone interested in starting a "new" league with private funding and having NO players acting with sole authority to make decisions?? There may be something needed next season...so lets get the ball rolling...oh and one more thing.....NO OWHA AFFILIATION!!!!!

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

Scandinavian opinion for draft ect. I do not how things should work in this league. For example three our (Finland) Olympians were drafted. So far none of the teams has contacted them. So I wonder what is the purpose fo draft and how to make league attractive to Europeans. Or just leave drafted Europeans out of scope ?

Not sure how the CWHL can make the league attractive to Europeans...these girls need money to survive and to be quite honest, the opportunities in Europe far outweigh the opportunities here.

Asking a player to come over from Sweden, Finland or wherever is alot to ask...especially if the league has not been up front and these players may be under the impression of NHL affiliation and the $35k bonus that had been suggested on this forum! From these ladies (CWHL)..get EVERYTHING in writing!!!!

This draft was for nothing but publicity! The CWHL has always been in the business of getting airtime when they need it! Look at some of the players who were drafted, and honestly, nothing against them but, this league has always maintained that they are "Where the Elite Compete"....look at the draft list and honestly decide for yourself.

For anyone who STILL isn't sure, here it is: players, coaches, and general managers in the CWHL will not be paid at all this season, and there is NO NHL affiliation/financial support, either. Some "pro" league!

Interesting cuz I know for a fact that coaches are getting paid...and players...(not much)...but some. Not sure about the GMs, but I'm sure if the coaches are being paid, so are the GMs. As for NHL affiliation...haven't heard much on this front...but I'm sure Mr. Stressed Twigg will fill us in on all the negatives we need/don't need to know. :p

At this point, I am unaware of coaches getting paid. The GM's were not in the original draft to be compensated.

Hey, LOL, I am not stressed at all!! I am having some good times over the summer. But on the serious side, don't pack up your car OSUAlum and go to the Mastercard Centre..as I have been advised that they DID NOT secure the ice and thus, have none there. That is from a very reliable source. At this point, they will be hard pressed to find any ice in the city unless they decide to "use" one of the local associations such as the Etobicoke Dolphins for their ice.

Who is running this gong show?? These players deserve better!! And I am not talking about the current and ex-National team players either!! I am talking about the players who don't get any stipend, don't get any airtime or don't get to do public speeches. Get up off your arses and start doing the things that need to be done!! If you don't, there may be someone just waiting to see what happens before jumping in to salvage what's left, if anything!

No NHL affiliation!! Sure they had a meeting but the NHL wants certain criteria met and those criteria will have to be met this coming season. To date, they are no where near being where they need to be!! And yes, I know, 15,000 at the Olympics should carry over right..right..Buehler..Buehler..Buehler..

That's my rant..LOL!! I hope everybody had an enjoyable summer as I had and I look forward to another year of girl's hockey in this province!

Hey...there he is...right on cue!

This is some disturbing news...there's something rotten in Denmark. You are right though...these girls deserve a better treatment than what's being served up here.

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

Twigg, thanks for the news. That's really unfortunate. I haven't booked the trip just yet. Hopefully someone will provide these ladies with a sheet of ice so they have a place to play. Guess I will stay put here in central Ohio until something materializes. Dang!

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

Let's put it this way: I somehow got myself stuck in the middle of this train wreck by signing up for tryouts, and I recently received an email from a team GM relating events at the recent World Hockey Summit. It said, and I quote: "While the NHL has not offered to provide funding for the CWHL, there was a positive tone to the discussions, and the dialogue between the CWHL and NHL will continue. Based on the current state of the talks, there will not be financial compensation for CWHL players, coaches, or General Managers this season." Then they proceeded to tell how they will try their best to help players that are relocating to find housing, etc. What about find finding decent jobs that pay enough to pay for the said housing and living expenses? It makes me wonder if the players are going to end up paying money TO the teams, as before, just to keep this thing afloat... And I am also now wondering if coaches ARE being paid, and trying to keep this tidbit from the unpaid players... National Team players or not, this isn't good for anyone!

Hip..don't blame yourself!! The CWHL should have realized what was going on from the get-go. Rather than come on here and squash the $35k myth, they did nothing. Why?? I see a simple explanation for this. They wanted, they needed the airtime that a so-called draft would give them so they wanted as many players such as yourself to sign up!

Yes, the CWHL will continue to try and get the NHL's ear. Let them spin it anyway they want, but the NHL has NO interest in the CWHL as it stands now or for the forseeable future. That's just the way it is!!

SJS, step aside, you have failed miserably and the longer you try to hold on, the more you come out looking like the dinos at the OWHA who should have moved on long ago!

Oh and Hip, by the way, check your email!

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

One of the coaches is a friened and she is getting paid. The rest of this news is unfortunate. Glad my D didn't stick around in hopes of something good coming from this venture.

Tip: Get rid of all OWHA affiliation. Seek solid corp sponsorship and continue to press the NHL.

That's it for me...Seymore Out!

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

I had been following this discussion from early June, and finally decided to join in because I thought it may be interesting to hear from a player's perspective. Seymore, if your coaching friend is truly being paid, it serves to prove my point -- that not only has this CWHL/OWHA duped the public and media with this bogus draft, but they are also knowingly misleading prospective players, and that is not a healthy atmosphere in which to play. Belive me, I am far from naive about sports politics, I was a figure skater long before I jumped into hockey (LOL!) and I have seen it ALL, let me tell you! I threw my hat into this ring along with a very large grain of salt, and now I want to sit back and watch it unfold this season (or crumble, as the case may be...) Can't wait to see what happens at the second draft later this month...

Re: NHL-CWHL affiliation on the horizon

I don't really have anything new to add here, just wanted to bump this and see if anyone in the GTA has heard anything lately about schedules or where the games will be played.
