NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

Wow. Bettman did something right for once. This alignment is WAY better then the existing system and actually feels a lot like the old conferences.

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

Well, I still think the idea of Florida and Tampa in the division with the old Adams Division teams is kind of goofy. But I love Washington back in the Patrick Division.

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

Also, wouldn't it make more sense for Carolina and Toronto to swap?

Edit: Nix that...

It IS goofy, but something had to be done to help them out, and by giving big market teams with good fanbases, they should hopefully see a rise in their home attendance. Ya know, snowbirds and those wusses who move south for the winter ;)

I like the new realignment and the move for balanced scheduling. Having every team come to your rink atleast once is a big plus. The cons will come during playoffs, but I don't feel too bad about that, to be the best you should have to beat the best, regardless if they are in the west or east.

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

That he is, but the Pens guys are worse.

I'm befuddled by all the new aspects of this realignment. Can't wait for the heated rivalry of Bruins-Panthers meeting in the first round.

yeah, thats assuming Florida makes it in the Top 4. Get used to seeing a lot more Boston vs. Buffalo/Montreal/Toronto playoff games...which I am ok with

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

Seems to make sense. Good to see Minnesota back with the midwest teams they had longstanding rivalries with. Makes me think back to the days of rooting for the North Stars against Al Secord's Blackhawks!

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

This is dumb. What was wrong with the "move Winnipeg and Columbus and leave the rest be" plan?

I think you had to shake things up a little bit. This format helps in case Phoenix moves somewhere else. Plus, it renews old rivalries.

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

This format is going to butcher the interest in the regular season. There will be exactly 7 other teams that I care about when it comes to my team's playoff seeding. The only sport that is worse is American League baseball, since the wildcard exists for the AL East. I only half-*** pay attention to the Eastern Conference before April now, and I'm sure the opposite is true for most Eastern Conference fans. A couple years of this format, and I won't care what Chicago, Detroit, Nashville and company are doing either.

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

Well according to the ratings, no one really cares now :D

No matter what we all think, hockey will never be a national sport. The more the NHL embraces the regional flavor the more successful it will be.

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

I guess once the realignment takes place, the only way to solve the "playoff issue" is to rank the top 16 teams based on their win percentage, their opponents win percentage, and their opponents-opponents win percentage. Then maybe this ranking will allow a room of smokers to seed the teams for the best interest of the NHL...

I agree, but in a couple of years the Bolts will be in Hamilton or Quebec and the Panthers can become the tenants of the new barn in Markham and all will be right with the world.;)

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

They better call these Adams, Patrick, Norris, and Smythe.

I'm surprised the Campbell conference teams aren't already complaining about how their conference has 16 teams and Prince of Wales has 14...

Other than the reason that there are four conferences, not two and no one knows what the playoff format is going to be when it's down to just four teams?

Agreed. I actually like this as you will have to win your conference playoff to get to the semis.

Also like the idea that they bring back the old names, Norris especially.

Maybe I'll finally give a crap about the Wildas a rival like I once did about the North Stars.

GO HAWKS!

As it turns out, this alignment means that nobody is isolated from the team which is geographically closest to them, with one exception, and that's the Bruins.*

*Well, technically the Blue Jackets are marginally closer to the Penguins than the Wings, but it's a matter of a few miles.
