NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

I won't be. Much rather play St. Louis and Chicago more often. Detroit too, but that appears to be a pipe dream.

I agree it would be pretty sweet to play Chicago, but there is some real hate between Vancouver and MN.

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

Kevin Allen thinks there is probably 17-18 votes for the "radical" realignment at minimum.

The latest proposal is the 15 teams in the West+ Winnipeg in two 8 team divisions and Montreal Toronto, Buffalo, Boston, and Ottawa with the two Florida teams, while Carolina/Washington go to the Pitt/Philly, New York region.

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

So that would be:

Tor Mon Ott Buf Bos TB Fla

NYR NYI NJD Pit Phi Was Car

LA Anh Pho SJ Van Edm Cal Col

Win Min Det Cls StL Nsh Dal Chi

At that point, you could try moving Det to one of the "Eastern" conferences/divisions. You just need to be able to accept splitting up the leftovers of the SE division.

I think the unspoken comment is that the "west" and "east" will balance out when Phoenix dies.

Here's what Bronconick is talking about:

I like it. There is no East/West conferences. It's just four groups of teams and the top four from each division make the post season. Plenty of room to allow easy re-arranging depending on where PHX lands, and if a 31st and 32nd franchise are awarded.

So basically, Illitch is getting a giant "Efffffff You!" from every other owner. ;)

And, it solves the Red Wings issue with the time zones. Fifty five games would take place in the Eastern Time Zone (41 home games, 14 "East" road games). Only eight "late night" games in the Mountain/Pacific time zones. That leaves 19 road games against divisional opponents, who are all in the Central time zone (except for Columbus, who is also ETZ).

But Illitch gets the last laugh as EVERYONE in the NHL not in San Jose's division has to deal with the stupid SJ airport curfew just once per year. :D

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

If we don't have Eastern and Western Conferences, can we go back to the Wales and Campbell Conferences.

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

Adding Florida and Tampa to the Northeast division is asinine. They're making this way too complicated. Base it on geography, period.

Last I heard, the Sharks just blow off the city and pay the fines come playoff time and when they're flying the night before a game. They land elsewhere during the regular season.

They're adding them to the old Adams division group of 5 and Carolina to the 6 member Patrick Division. No rivalries break up that way. Easiest way to split up the "Eastern 10" and get some votes for the plan.

Give us your best shot. It really is the easiest way to separate the teams and keep as many of the existing rivalries as possible given that the Ott-Tor-Buf-Mtl-Bos and the Pitt-Phil-NYR-NYI-NJD rivalries are effectively fixed.

At that point the only other option becomes blowing up the Central:
Ott-Tor-Buf-Mtl-Bos-Det-Win
Pitt-Phil-NYR-NYI-NJD-Min-Chi-StL
Wash-Car-TB-FL-Nash-CBJ-Dal

Depends on if the Det-Chi-StL-Dal rivalry is worth saving

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=604729 What are your thoughts about about what the new conferences and divisions will look like. I for one will be ticked if the Wild - Canuck rivalry goes by the wayside.

I won't miss it for a second fwiw. Bring on realignment where the Wild play teams in the same part of the country!

Re: NHL Board of Governors meeting - Conference Realignment: Who goes where????

My proposal:

Division 1

Boston Bruins
Montreal Canadiens
Buffalo Sabres
Toronto Maple Leafs
Ottawa Senators
Detroit Red Wings
Columbus Blue Jackets
Washington Capitals

Division 2

New York Islanders
New York Rangers
New Jersey Devils
Philadelphia Flyers
Pittsburgh Penguins
Carolina Hurricanes
Tampa Bay Lightning
Florida Panthers

Division 3

Chicago Blackhawks
St. Louis Blues
Nashville Predators
Dallas Stars
Minnesota Wild
Winnipeg Jets
Colorado Avalanche

Division 4

Edmonton Oilers
Calgary Flames
Vancouver Canucks
San Jose Sharks
Los Angeles Kings
Anaheim Ducks
Phoenix Coyotes

Western divisions with 7 teams each to help make up for the fact that they travel more. Keeps the PHI/PIT/NYR rivalries, as well as the BOS/MTL rivalry. Adds Detroit into the Northeast to renew rivalries with teams like TOR and BOS. While you lose out a bit with the Capitals being separated from PHI/PIT/NYR, you gain them playing the likes of BOS/DET/MTL.

Top 4 in each division makes the playoffs. Playoffs are divisional for the first round only, then reseeded throughout. This would allow for something like a CHI/VAN Stanley Cup Final.
