NHL 2026: The Olympics Will Be Mammoth!

The Swiss League only has two arenas with 10k+ capacity (since we’re talking about replacing a 16k seat arena), Zurich and Bern, and neither are particularly close to Italy.

Turin still has Palasport Olimpico, which still has its ice plant, has hosted Olympic hockey, has been renovated, has a 12-14k capacity, and is close to Milan.
The biggest problem they'd have is that the arena is a multi-use where they also run tennis, MMA, music, basketball, concerts, etc. Canceling everything they probably have scheduled in February on no notice because Milan doesn't have their shit together would probably be pricey.

If their website is accurate the arena has no events planned during January and February.

I mean, there could still be events but nothing seems to be planned.

By train it's faster to get to Bern from Milan than it is to get to Cortino or any of the other non-skating facilities in Italy.

Turin would likely be ideal because it's a 45+ minute train ride from Milan so people don't need to switch their accommodations - but good luck getting 16,000 people back to Milan on a train at 11:30pm.

The owners said a while ago that the rink has to be approved by them, or the NHL players don't go. The owners already hate the idea that their star player could get hurt. If the ice sucks, that's the tipping point to pull their support.
Look, i mentioned it earlier, the arena in Turin has no events scheduled for January and February. There’s clearly some sort of backup plan.

so, just found out that here in MN at the World Juniors, we'll be piloting the new credentialing process that the IIHF is rolling out at the Milan Olympics....they will supposedly have IT people on hand

As someone who will be working this, why do I not have a good feeling

i asked an NHL employee today about how the league feels and hoooboy i don't think its going over well.

Quote was basically "its going over like a pride parade in Siberia"
