NHL 2026: The Olympics Will Be Mammoth!

He could be both. Think of where he is from.
i don't think its that, despite what dallas fans say. they also think Matt Boldy, who currently has more points than Robo, shouldn't be on the team. it's insane, they both should be. Guerin wants to win badly, and i think his main issue is as mentioned before - he can't let go of past thoughts. Yes, Canada is faster - but doesn't mean we can win by slowing them down. im guessing he still thinks of Robo as a terrible skater, which honestly, its not great- but his skating has evolved to not be a detraction anymore, and goddamn the guy finds a way to score despite his skating.

the old boys club needs to die off, but i'm not sure it will. the fact that Quennville is still allowed to coach is nuts. the fact that nothing happened after the Campbell emails is insane. the way the players safety works is insane.

honestly, i want these maga loving inbreds to not even medal anyway.

also: I hope Finland crushes tomorrow.

I think that racism is part of the equation here, but not in the overt sense that Robertson is being excluded specifically because he’s a Filipino from California.

It’s more that it’s a, I hesitate to say subtle because subtle isn’t really accurate, maybe unconscious level of racism. They rate Robertson as a “one dimensional, not very physical” player (even though that’s categorically not true and there’s plenty of evidence to support that) because, in their minds, there’s no way a half-Filipino kid from California could ever be a physical type player.

Because of his race, the leadership has already made their assessment of him and there’s almost nothing he could do to change that.

So yeah, they’re stupid and racist.

While the Avs are off to a great start at 30-2-7, there's an equally great start in the AHL. Grand Rapids is off to a 21-1-2 start. Just had a 14 game winning streak snapped in OT on NYE.

A good writeup on the Jason Robertson snub.

Reputation, right or wrong, matters, and once you’ve got one, it’s hard to ever beat the charges that you’ve been saddled with. This is true in all facets of life, obviously, in this case an Olympic hockey roster is just providing us a case study.
And in this case, Robertson was doomed by a two reputations that couldn’t co-exist — his and that of USA Hockey.

USA Hockey’s crowning moment, back in 1980, set an ethos that a team doesn’t need the best players, but rather the “right ones.” Forty-five years, and zero Olympic golds later, Team USA still overly embraces the underdog mentality and belief that when building an Olympic team “roles” are the most important thing.

This is where critics will argue, and I’m here for it, that good teams, championship teams, have checking lines and players that understand their roles. That you can’t succeed without players willing to put in the work.

And that’s completely true in the NHL, because of the salary cap you simply can’t put together a roster with the 12 best forwards on the planet.

But in the Olympics, where there is no salary cap, you can just put together the best possible roster. You don’t have to build a team by NHL rules and regulations, it’s OK to think that maybe, just maybe, simply controlling the puck more than the other team on all four lines might not be a bad strategy to scoring goals — which is how they determine who wins, by the way.

On paper, Team USA should be the second-best team going into the Olympics —maybe the best if you consider the goaltending discrepancies between them and Canada. It’s OK to be one of the favorites, it’s OK to act like it and it’s OK to build a team where based purely on depth you should control possession.

But that’s not how these teams are built. They’re built by NHL ethos and built in the Olympic spirit of 1980.

USA Hockey took so many lessons from the team that won in 1980, but seems to have forgotten, now as a hockey world power, you are also allowed to take lessons from the Soviet Union team that won every other Olympic Gold between 1964 and 1988.

Picking Jason Robertson would have been a break from tradition, it would have been acknowledging that maybe your “roles” are flexible and that the coaching staff was competent enough to find one of those “roles” for the top American scorer from the past 12 months.

But that’s not how this works, nothing Robertson did or could do would have made a difference. His reputation was set, but more importantly, USA Hockey was already too far set in its own ways.

So the winter classic is tonight. Will be the most southern one, being in Miami. And I'm sure it was *supposed* to be one of the most extreme temp ones, too. Since Miami is regularly in the 80s this time of year. But not this year. The high today was just 70, and the current temp is 62.

The prep had two coolers for the ice, and they are going slightly thicker. But with the pretty cool ambient temps (cooler than most NHL rinks), this one is pretty easy.

Thats much closer to the temps of the normal arenas anyway, which will make things much easier to control. And its at night, so no sun beating on it too.

Probably better ice than some of the other outdoor games they've held.

I get that it would be difficult now with the college football playoffs using the January 1st bowl games, but how did the NHL absolutely fumble making the Winter Classic an absolute lock?

Such a great thing they stumbled into, cheapened it by adding "stadium series" games as cash cows, made questionable matchups for games, never let the game breathe on its own by scheduling multiple games on the same day (some even at the same time), and now it hasn't been on the same day for the last three years.

But they're still making that sweet, sweet corporate money. 🙄

Boo!!!

I did make it to a game (Sweden, of course). I really wanted to go tonight and then my wife reminded me that we have a wedding to attend at 4 today. Who schedules a wedding for 4 p.m. on Friday, January 2?

Hopefully the the boys get by Finland tonight and I get a chance to see a medal round game.
Sorry! I've spent time with the Finns this tournament and have a soft spot.

I really like the old style design of the Rangers uniforms (and coaches jackets) for the Winter Classic. And the "Big Apple" on the shoulder is the chef's kiss.
