NHL 2019-20 #1: Where Toronto Plans To Win Without Playing Defense.

Re: NHL 2019-20 #1: Where Toronto Plans To Win Without Playing Defense.

1989 NCAA title game.

In other hockey news, two used-to-be-rival high school teams have decided to consolidate. Eveleth-Gilbert and Virginia will then be known as the Rock Ridge Wolverines.

Yes, the Blazing Saddles references began instantly.

Saw this on Facebook and I thought it would be a good question to ask here:

If you had the opportunity to change the result of ONE game from hockey history, which game would it be?

For me, it depends. For NMU, I'd love it if we could flip the loss to St. Cloud in the NCAAs. That was St. Cloud's first tourney win. For Detroit, the 2009 Cup Final game where Lilja committed a delay of game penalty, costing the Red Wings the game. The Wings would eventually lose the series to Pittsburgh.

1989 NCAA Championship game without question. Stupid iron!!

Wasn't alive for it, but 1988 Title game vs LSSU in Lake Placid. Still F that cheater, Stauber.

Re: NHL 2019-20 #1: Where Toronto Plans To Win Without Playing Defense.

2015 NCAA first round, Tech vs. St, Clooud. Tech is leading against a tough Cloud team 2-1 in the 3rd, then surrenders a goal to tie it with 38 seconds left, then in OT a Tech skater loses an edge entering the Cloud zone, coughs up the puck, and gives up the rush to the GWG. One of those games that leaves you questioning God.

For NMU, while the 2010 loss to St, Clooud giving them their first NCAA Tournament win in program history, I'd rather NMU wasn't in that position and won the CCHA tournament title against Michigan. (Then again, looking over the PWR standings and the brackets, NMU might have had to face North Dakota. I don't think they would have been high enough to get to Albany and take on UNH).
And St. Cloud State would like to thank both of your schools for participating in games that were humiliating to those not wearing scarlet and black those days. Helmet Kids rule!

I feel like him and Brett Hull should hang out together just to see what hijinks ensue.

Add Gronk and Patrick Kane, and turn it into a father/son movie. John Daly will play the aging mentor.

I feel like the up and coming generation has not yet discovered its Great Party Animal / Sex Machine Athlete.

I'm hoping it's Coco Gauff.

Rumors heating up that the Seattle name will be Kracken.

I'm.... not thrilled. Can still win me over with a kick a** logo though.

Guh. Because the Raptors isn't a cautionary tale.

There are so many wonderful Seattle names.

The logo is going to be a 12-year old boy's idea of cool.

It's the NHL Jets situation all over again. True North adamantly refused to use the Jets name, but public demand was so much locally (and throughout the hockey community) that they reluctantly went with Jets.

I really want one of the NHL Moose jerseys that are likely in a closet of the Bell MTS Place basement. Copper and forest green would have been an amazing color scheme for the the NHL. And to top it off with the "angry moose" logo?

Ugh.

Re: NHL 2019-20 #1: Where Toronto Plans To Win Without Playing Defense.

I'm hoping we're getting out of the hi-octane, busy, EXTEEEEEEEEEEEEEME derp cycle and going into a clean, simple cycle. There have been a few good signs: the Indians' simple C is excellent. In the NHL the dumbas-sery of the last 20 years looks cheap now and should be abating: the Ducks, Wild, Blue Jackets, and Panthers are all hideous lessons. The Coyotes showed a representational, non-symbolic logo can still be lovely (the Orioles and Cardinals also prove this), but that was a perfect storm and their alt logo is a war crime.

The Metropolitans logo was, well, really strange:

I doubt anybody has the stones to bring that off; you'd have to fight the morons every day.

These would each have been wonderful, but we can't have nice things:

If it must be the adolescent Kraken, at least make it this logo, which is clever:

or this, which is unobjectionable:

and not this one, which will make me root for Rainier to blow the city away:
