NHL 2018-19 Part 1 - No power outage in Toronto this year!!

Re: NHL 2018-19 Part 1 - No power outage in Toronto this year!!

On the 50s films:

Fun to see Campbell, Adams, and Norris in person.

The old barns are beautiful, in particular the Montreal Forum.

The absence of goalie pads is fascinating. The absence of a goalie mask is terrifying since while there are no slapshots the puck is often deflected. I'm amazed all those guys weren't blinded.

There is very little hitting. The skills level is spotty even in the Finals, but the great players are wizards. The skating is great, though. I would describe it as women's hockey plus fighting.

Between actual stature and much smaller pads the players could be high schoolers -- seemingly slight and frail. Obviously it is all sinew. They aren't at all muscular -- they look more like gymnasts.

Very little stick play between players. I assume the wages of a high stick was a beat down because you never see one.

The quality of these films is outstanding. They must have done significant restoration.

Love that all the off ice officials (official scorer, penalty box men, timekeeper) and the whole crowd are all wearing hats.

There are at most 1% women in the crowd.

And I'm assuming the men are all wearing shirt and tie? That's so weird in old footage of any sport before wearing jerseys or team apparel became the default.

Probably, it's too dark to see.

It's really weird to see old footage of college football games where the entire crowd including (especially) students are in suit and tie and the freshman are actually wearing beanies.

The only time you see something like that today is the academies. When they do it it's very cool.

Kuznetsov gets four year ban from the IIHF. Tested positive for cocaine.

The Swedish Mafia is dead in Detroit. Nicklas Kronwall, free agent as of July 1st, has announced his retirement from the NHL, and will stay in Hockeytown in the Wings front office.

If Kenny was still GM, Kronner would have been resigned to a front loaded terrible multi-year deal.

Hooray Stevie Y!

This makes me happy.

Now if they could just convince Ericsson to hang 'em up, the kids might get enough playing time to eventually fix our D.

There is one 1990 draftee still skating in the NHL.

Who is he?

God, how is that possible? Jagr? Chara?

I'll take the Czechs vs the field.

Nice way of phrasing that question so it includes Wes McCauley ('90). :p

Of active NHL players, the oldest draft class with players are 1996 (Cullen/Chara) and 1997 (Thornton/Marleau).
