If it's anything like the East Side Access tunnel, it will be a LONG wait.

Were you the one who posted the story from the beat reporter who got Stan Fischler to talk to the owners after they'd made the commitment? The owners were talking about the LIRR modifications and what was necessary and passing it off as nothing. Fischler is apparently (and I have no trouble imagining this) a train fanatic who knows everything about the trains and subways around the City, and he spends 30 minutes explaining to the owners how it's almost impossible to fix unless you do about 18 things, several of which probably demand eminent domain, and all the time the owners are looking more and more suicidal like "oh sh-t what did we just do?"

Here is a passing reference in Deadspin, but I recall reading a more detailed account elsewhere.

From all accounts, Islanders fans are for the most part relieved at the prospect of being spared the trek to Brooklyn (and the terrible sightlines once they got there). But they’re still concerned about the trek to Belmont, especially with the train issues.

James Francis Fess, a lifelong Islanders fan—he claims that his father literally placed an Islanders hat on his head the day he was born—and a leader of the Blue and Orange Army fan group, worries that the traffic on the nearby Cross Island Parkway on game days “is going to be insanity. The traffic around the Coliseum is nothing like around Belmont. You can look up any single day on a traffic map, and I guarantee you that it’s going to be black on the Cross Island.”

Fess says he got to ride to the Belmont arena announcement last season with the team’s entourage, which included both Ledecky and longtime broadcaster Stan Fischler, who moonlights as a transit expert. The resulting conversation, he says, was both enlightening and worrisome.

“I mentioned to [Ledecky], ‘It’s not true that people will have to transfer at Jamaica still, right? Like how they do for the Barclays Center.’ And he’s like, ‘No, we want the train to go directly there. Stan’ll know about this, because Stan knows everything about trains.’”

Fischler, recalls Fess, began rattling off a list of changes that would be needed to make full service to Belmont a reality. “Ledecky’s sitting there like, ‘Wait a second.’ I see the look on his face, and I think ‘Oh no, they didn’t even think about this.’”

They'll open on time. You just won't be able to get there by anything but car. Which, well, the Coliseum.

I may be missing something, but Belmont Race park has capacity of over 100k people. So a hockey game of a 20k sell out will not be nearly as bad as that. (I'm noting the part where the traffic will be insane).

And for those in the rest of the country who has to drive to hockey games, cry me a river. I'd love to jump on the D train and end up at the Pizzarina. Aint going to happen.

55% of New Yorkers do not own a car.

Not everybody lives on a f-cking farm.

Kep

Wasn't me, but Stan has written a number of books on the NY Subway system (heck he probably remembers nickle fares!) and knows quite a bit on the infrastructure.

My Godfather and his family lived in Floral Park, right around the corner from Belmont. He and my aunt are gone and his kids are scattered to the four winds.

Re: NHL 2018-19 Part 1 - No power outage in Toronto this year!!

If you can afford NHL tickets in New York, you can afford an Uber/Lyft/whatever. ;)

Two upper deck tickets for a Thursday against the Colorado Avalanche at Belmont (once it opens) will probably be 1/10th of an Uber ride.

And I'm supposed to really care?

BTW, how many people who live on Long Island watch the team vs. Manhattan? And how many of them live in the very many neighborhoods around Queens and places east of Belmont Park? I don't think the majority of fans are coming from Manhattan.

Me neither, but the LIE is the world's longest parking lot (thanks to Fred Feldman). A 7pm game time is gridlock city so you have to train it.

I guess the Dashing Commuter will take the LIRR to Belmont after work and then to home after the game.

BTW, here's a cuurent map of the Long Island Rail Road:

What's LIE? Is that the area near the new arena?

There's not much actual parking around the Pizzarina- you will all see that next year at the Frozen Four. But the only choice is to drive downtown... I'm not sure why it's such a burden to Long Islanders. Lot single family homes and lots of cars there.

Re: NHL 2018-19 Part 1 - No power outage in Toronto this year!!

Speaking of the Islanders- them and the Jackets may be in for a long wait. Looks like these games may go at least 6. And round 2 won't start until round 1 is done....

Long Island Expressway. It goes from Midtown Manhattan to Flushing to Queens to nowhere near Nassau or Elmont as it heads northeast toward the Hamptons. But, it's *the* main route out of the city.

Sorry - Long Island Expressway

a.k.a. the Long Island Distressway. Famously terrible highway that runs along the spine of the island.

Most Isles fans live in Nassau or western Suffolk County. Queens and Brooklyn are split, the other boroughs are mostly Rangers fans. c.f. Mets vs Yankees.

But it connects to the aforementioned Cross Island Parkway near there.

Kep - from Bethpage at 5pm how would you get to / from Belmont for a 7pm game?

Southern State. That's actually not too bad.

The question is how do you get there from say Hicksville or Westbury?

At least it's against the traffic.

That's how you have to get there from the city. If you're coming from Brooklyn I'd take the Belt but of course that will run you right past JFK which is a standstill at utterly unpredictable times.

Just in general LI traffic is the stuff of Seattle or LA nightmares. This is another reason why LI is one of the best places to be from. I've never been anywhere except Honolulu where traffic was even remotely bothersome, and I've never been anywhere except Boston where the people seemed like as-sholes.

The path of low expectations leads to the tower of satisfaction.
