NHL 2018-19 Part 1 - No power outage in Toronto this year!!

Re: NHL 2018-19 Part 1 - No power outage in Toronto this year!!

@simmonssteve: Good guy Bob Boughner has been fired in Florida. That makes six coach openings for next season. And Buffalo should make seven openings. Have to believe Craig Berube stays in St. Louis so there are coaches to be hired in FLA, ANA, EDM, LA, OTT, Philly and should be Buffalo.

---
@GeorgeRichards: #FlaPanthers say they want a coach with ‘Stanley Cup pedigree’ and have an owner who wants and says he is willing to pay Joel Quenneville. Press conference Monday.

This is the first season since 1984 I have given a sh-t about the NHL post-season. Hey, when did the Minnesota North Stars move?

Re: NHL 2018-19 Part 1 - No power outage in Toronto this year!!

The on-ice product of the NHL playoffs is often the best post-season in sports. The format the NHL uses for their playoffs though, leaves something to be desired.

Is it the wild card(s) that causes the hatred? Everyone clamored to have divisional rivals once again for the playoffs because "conference rivalries don't exist," so the NHL went back to the four divisions (ala Adams, Patrick, Norris, Smyth) because fans wanted the divisions to be important.

If we did conference (and gave the division winners the top two spots), we'd have:

(1/MetroWinner) Tampa vs (8) Columbus (same matchup)
(3/AtlanticWinner) Washington vs (7) Carolina (same matchup)
(2) Boston vs (6) Pittsburgh
(4) Islanders vs (5) Toronto

(1/PacificWinner) Calgary vs (8) Colorado (same matchup)
(3/CentralWinner) Nashville vs (7) Vegas
(2) San Jose vs (6) Dallas
(4) Winnipeg vs (5) St. Louis (same matchup)

(Or, don't award divisional winners the top seed and flip WAS with BOS and also SJ with NSH)

It's an abortion but so is everything except straight 1-16, no divisons, no conferences, so whatever.

I actually like that it's so stupid. It kinda puts everything in perspective. In case you imagine it can't be worse, the WHL used to have this system:

Top 6 teams make the playoffs.
Play three series, 1-6, 2-5, 3-4.
Reseed.
1 gets a bye in the second round, 2-3 play a full series.
Winner plays the 1.

If you can do worse than that I'll give you a prize.

redux

After Seattle
8 divisions of 4

Elimination Game
3 at 2 ONE GAME
Divisional Championship
1 v 2/3 best of 7

Quarterfinals -> Final
reseed after each round so best plays worst survivor. all best of 7.

Start the season in September and end it by Memorial Day.

Re: NHL 2018-19 Part 1 - No power outage in Toronto this year!!

My main complaint about the format as it stands is the 2nd round matchups are potentially Conference Final worthy. It's very possible we get 1v2 in both the East and West this year, in the 2nd round.

If that's the only problem just get rid of divisions and straight seed the conference. That's actually almost practical since then you can balance schedule within conference and have apples-to-apples comparisons.

Once Seattle joins they have the prefect opportunity. Keep the stupid divisions because blah blah regional rivalry blah blah. Seed them 1-8 and play intradivisional through the Div F. Take the 4 winners and seed them 1-4 by their RS record (i.e., there are no "conferences" any more -- there are 4 regional NHLs and the 4 winners are reseeded and play 2 rounds for the title.

Of course, the best solution is to replace all the series until the final with single elimination games. Get the first 3 rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs done in one week and end the season in April.

And cut the RS down to 50 games.

And get rid of every team south of Philadelphia and west of Chicago.

OK, I'm done now.

Quenville's reportedly being offered big bucks by Florida. Housely's done in Buffalo

Exactly. this year you could argue that the top three teams in the East are in the same division, and one of Boston or Toronto won't even make it to the second round.

Adams Division bias. There are no "three top teams" in the East. There are no "three top teams" in the NHL. There's one top team and meh. The playoffs this year are one team vs the field of 15. The Cup should either be inscribed "Tampa" or "Other." and that means Let's Go Other, because FL can eat a bag of dicks.

I really hope the Wings can get a better draft spot in the lottery tonight.

But, hot take, I think Jack Hughes is overrated and isn't someone the Wings need. I've watched him play for the Under-18 team in the USHL, and he was... underwhelming. A seven-two rout of the Chicago Steel in February, and he had an assist and that was almost by accident because he wasn't involved in much of anything all night.

This. Wings need defensemen (plural), not an overrated center.
