Jonathon Toews scores 2 goals in a 1:12 to tie it up and send this one to overtime. Captain Serious and former Sioux comes through.

Dissecting the GWG: Obviously Bickell's failure to get the puck deep directly led to the Ducks' successful counter-attack. In the WGN Postgame show, Troy Murray went on an extended rant criticizing the failed dump-in, first and foremost because it denied the Hawks the opportunity to test the shaky Anderson.

But Murray never connected the two thoughts. Was it really the horrible misfire it's being made out to be? Or was Bickell actually trying to throw the puck on net?

Ultimately I suppose it doesn't matter; Bickell can be criticized either way. I'd just like to fully understand what happened. Anyone get a better look, or have further info?

Or, maybe we're better off just forgetting about Game 5. I woke up this morning thinking: Did that really happen? Surreal.

Memo to the Blackhawks: Bringing the 'A' game for the full 60 minutes of regulation time is strongly recommended for Game 6, and hopefully Game 7. No time off. Not a period; not even 37 seconds.:o

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

Can the league stop fretting about scoring? I'd say we've gotten back to the point where you no longer need elite goaltending to make a deep playoff run, because you cannot look at any of the four goalies here in the conference final and say they've been elite.

Does that mean the game is perfect? No. More obstruction could probably be called, but this is still a much better game than the one we became accustomed to watching 1995-2004, where the outcome of almost every game relied on special teams.

Bickell slammed the puck off a defender's shin just inside the blue line when the correct play was to dump it into the corner so that the Hawks could execute their line change safely - he knew that the change was on as he went straight to the bench...

It's 101 and something that gets coached out of most players in squirts.

His "dump in" was effectively a breakout pass for the Ducks directly into an odd man rush.

His idiocy was compounded by the fact that it was the first OT, so it was the long change meaning that his teammates that were changing had almost no time/chance to get back into the play.

It was colossally stupid and an incredible fail on his part.

He deserves the heat that he's getting, especially since he's been almost useless in relation to his salary and what's expected of him. If he was sitting on 6 or 7 playoff goals right now, people might be more willing to forgive.

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

Of course it can be argued that the Hawk's failure to bother playing hockey until the second period was a big (maybe THE big) reason that they lost the game, but the game was miraculously in OT and we didn't even get a chance to shoot the puck once at a shaky Andersen.

The first period was irrelevant once OT started.

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

The other question that could be asked is why the Toews line didn't start the OT.

Toews was coming off two goals in the last 3 minutes of regulation.

I realize that the 2nd line had been starting periods, but that doesn't mean they have to.

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

Appreciate the additional info on the Bickell play. Guess I blinked at the wrong time and couldn't figure out why the puck wasn't deep in the Ducks' zone. Was hoping there was a mitigating factor; but if there's not, there's not. Better to deal with reality...

Agree with everything in your two follow-up posts.

Sure. Course they couldn't be bothered not to play hockey when playing the Wild. Only the Ducks. Funny how that works.

The difference in this series is the level of the competition, not the Hawks' level of play (other than period 1 last night).

Ducks>>>>>>>Wild

Rangers up 2-0 on the Bolts in the first. Bolts in my opinion need to win it tonight. If not the Rangers will win game 7.

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

Cheapest ticket on Stub Hub for Friday's game 7 is $821. $821!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, I won't be going. Need a place to go watch it!

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

The 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs definitely won't be known for stellar goaltending.

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

Did you miss the Washington/NYR series? That series was ENTIRELY goaltending.

Yeah and the Pitt series with the Rangers wasn't bad either but other than that no goalie has really stuck out as being consistently great.

.... I wasn't kidding when I said it would be $750+ just to get in.

I'd wager a guess just about any watering hole will have the game on multiple screens.

Honestly, given the home city? That seems cheap (relatively).

Re: NHL 2015, Part II - Stanley Cup Playoff Race and Beyond

That will go down a little as it gets closer to game time. Also, go to NHL Ticket Exchange. As a season ticket holder, you can automatically post tickets there through your Ranger account manager and they tend to run cheaper than Stubhub. I am struggling on whether to sell 2 of mine. I have alot of people that obviously want to go but man they are going for alot of money!
