NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Nice to have someone in the area who kinda understands the dynamics of the situation instead of "HURRRR HOCKEY IN DESERT NO WORK!".

Everything I've heard from fans of the team say the same thing, having an arena in Glendale rather than downtown is a huge issue in terms of traffic and commuting etc. That and consistently having a terrible team will result in bad attendance and lack of interest.
Glendale was desperate for many years to get on the map and they decided luring pro sports teams was the way to do it, pretty much regardless of cost. Things worked out well with the Arizona Cardinals relocating to Glendale, but the NFL is popular enough that it's ok to stick the stadium way on one side of the metro area (plus games are sundays when traffic is way easier). Hockey doesn't have as much margin for error, and sticking the arena in Glendale was always a loser to most folks who didn't have a dog in the fight. Moving the Coyotes to Glendale cut out the entire east side of Phoenix, including Scottsdale, Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, etc. from easily attending, as you'd have to fight rush hour traffic for an hour plus to go to a game if you live on the east side. But, Glendale wanted them so bad they didn't pay attention to such obvious facts and it's been a mess ever since.

I'm not going to say Phoenix is a great hockey town, but it's growing (and ASU going D1 can only further boost the local market!) and with a well run club and a good arena location, they would be ok. Sadly, I doubt that will ever be tested.

Glendale using the loophole also sounds dicey from what I've read and heard locally today.

I was right about the kid. :) If I'm a Lightning fan, I pay someone to club Ben Bishop's leg to make sure he doesn't return this year.

I don't know what to think anymore, except that the Lightning are a fantastic and confident hockey team right now. Just gotta hope the Hawks "been there, done that" grit and experience somehow trumps speed and skill.

In all reality this thing could be over. Bolts have been the better team in all 4 games in my opinion. But as we know hockey doesn't work that way with a hot goalie and all.

Gawd, I would have thought the net would have come off after that.

Both goalies are a mess handling the puck tonight.

The Manchester Monarchs won the Calder Cup. Everybody's favorite 4th Liner for life, Paul Bissonette, part of the team.

One more W! Best effort by the Hawks in this series. By far.

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Is it too much to ask to blow these guys out just once?

Nice win.

Home ice for a shot at a Cup.

In this series a 2 goal win would be a blowout. Hawks are going to celebrate a Cup title on home ice for the first time in 'ever. I don't see this one heading back to Florida.

Evidently yes. But sight unseen, I'd gladly take another 2-1 win. "No team ever led by more than one goal" would actually be a pretty cool way to remember this series.

Don't jinx it.;) But yeah, first time since 1938 if it works out.

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

I dunno about this whole winning the Cup on home ice thing... My dad has tried to see that happen in 1971... Yea :( Then he got to see the Toilet Seats skate around with Le Coupe again in 1973... Not sure I like the ju-ju associated with Stanley hanging out in Chicago :(

It was also the last thing they'll ever do on ice as an AHL team in Manchester. They become an ECHL team next season.

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

It's going to be awkward when they raise the banner in Manchester. Wonder if Ontario raises a banner too. ;)

(I know Ontario won't but it's funny that the AHL franchise wins a cup and then they inherit them. The whole Pacific Division is going to be weird next year in the AHL. The five California teams will only play 68 games, the rest of the league 76.)
