Re: NHL 2012: The Chase for the Cup

I love Tim Thomas but I had an interesting thought...

...Boston's struggling right now. Not Timmy's fault, and I don't buy the media hype that he's a distraction. The Bruins need to assume Horton's going to be out, for a while. They need a Top 6 Winger, at the absolute minimum. Preferably a Top 4 Defenseman as well.

Chicago is absolutely desperate for Goaltending, and that seems to be their biggest missing piece at this point. They can make a solid run with good goaltending. Why not see if they'd be willing to trade a winger, someone like Sharp potentially. Boston's got pretty young talent right now, they could even afford to part with a high draft pick. It would help out both teams for sure.

Thomas does have a NMC, but I think given the right team, he'd waive it.

Re: NHL 2012: The Chase for the Cup

Thomas is like an overpurchased stock and probably has high market value. I speculate he has a couple of solid years in him before the bruins need to seriously consider alternatives. That said, they could ( as UNH said) go into the market targeting teams that need to fix their issues between the pipes. Plenty of teams out there who fit that bill. Boston on the other hand looks anemic up front and rely a lot on their blue line to generate offense. If they can get a piece of that puzzle and get a guy who can play on one of the top two lines and generate some offense, they will be in contention for the east.

As for the rangers, the only thing holding them back right now are injuries. Perennially injury prone Gaborik is the first one I could see getting hurt. If the rangers lose lundquist, they won't make it anywhere in the playoffs. this guy is putting up *better* numbers than thomas was last year and will play a similar role should the Rangers go towards the Stanley cup.

No, they could get lucky with a goaltender like they did in 2010 and 2011. Goaltending has been questionable for years but has been masked by a over-achieving offense and a "get the puck the Hell out of our end defense." (aka: Red Wings hockey since mid 90's)

While Campbell was a liability, he sure wasn't as awful as Leddy*, and they had the right role players to compliment the "core" the last few years. Today? There isn't the right set of guys to compliment the Core.

Maybe the 'Hawks need to dip from the well again, call up a goalie from Rockford and see if they can ride him for a while.

Oh, and I absolutely love that the Hawks thread seemed to jiinx them. :D

* what is it with D-men with five letter last names that begin with L that instantly makes them so goddammed awful? Lebda, Lilja, Leddy, Hawks prospect Lavin.

According to Leafs' fans, Lebda's about even with Anthrax.

Funny you mention this...driving home from work, listening to Felger and Mazz, they bring up something Jeremy Roenick said earlier today: He thinks the Blackhawks might be willing to trade Patrick Kane for some solid goaltending. And of course being a Boston show, they brought up the possibility of the Bruins taking the other end of that deal.

I don't follow the Blackhawks as much, but why would they be more willing to trade Kane? I always figured Kane the much better player.

I think Toews may be the only one that is untouchable on the Hawks. I can see the trade because I think Rask can be a #1.

Happy 40th to Jaromir Jagr! He's still got it...but thankfully not the mullet!:p

1992 Cup Final

This season against Pittsburgh

Re: NHL 2012: The Chase for the Cup

The Canadiens have figured out why they have struggled scoring on Thomas; he's in the crease. Running him hasn't worked thus far, however.

Re: NHL 2012: The Chase for the Cup

So does Marchand get suspended for this? Certainly looks like "a predatory, low hit delivered intentionally" - not that he hasn't done that before.

From a friend's Facebook. "If the Habs were smart, they'd wear Obama masks so Thomas wouldn't show up."

(Disclaimer: The above statement is not an endorsement for/against the Thomas' political views.)

It's an interesting play. A classic hip check is when the other guy is being aggressive and trying to get around you. Marchand keeps being the aggressive one and drops at the last second. There's really no reason why he can't just do a normal shoulder to shoulder hit there. Not sure it's suspendable, but I bet he gets at least a call telling him to stop with the bend over and hit someone tactics.

On second look, the RDS feed looks worse.

Kane's part of the "core" for the Hawks, but he hasn't improved since hitting the NHL. He's a defensive liability, lazy, and more concerned about being a Sportscenter Top 10 play than being a teammate.

Last year, he spent half the season trying to use the "Stanley Cup winning move" to score goals, and never scored a goal using that style... But he kept trying.

This year, you can see all those flaws now that the blueline and goaltending sucks. So much, that Quenneville moved Kane to try and find teammates he'd work with. It's like "find Sidney Crosby a winger," only Kane isn't as good.

I honestly expected the Hawks to move him and keep the "role guys" instead during their firesale after winning the Cup, but, the kept Kane.

Just my observation as a Wings fan caught in Hockey Hell (Chicagoland).

Re: NHL 2012: The Chase for the Cup

Kane is a party guy. The B's don't need him polluting the locker room.

Marshmont should get a game or two. He obviously hasn't learned his lesson.

Some of those "goaltender interference" calls last night were a joke.

Why is Detroit so excited about a 2-game home winning streak?

Re: NHL 2012: The Chase for the Cup

Marshmont didn't get a suspension.

Meanwhile, the classy fans in Montreal gave a standing ovation when Chara got cut in the face with a hockey puck off the stick of Tomas Plekanec. At least Plekanec checked to see if he was OK and the Canadiettes radio broadcast called the fans out, but I can't say I'm surprised by the actions of those <del>animals</del> fans.

Re: NHL 2012: The Chase for the Cup

Murray taken to the hospital for a puck to the throat for precautionary measures.

Or they need to sedate him so he doesn't automatically crush Dominic Moore (**** Harvard) who was just traded to the Sharks.
