Kinda like fellow blue-liner Chris Chelios?

Wait, I'm pretty sure that I'm the only one who remembers his two week stint as an Atlanta Thrasher.
I'm pretty sure you're the only one who remembers the Atlanta Thrashers. :p

Congrats to Lidstrom. I half-thought that he was some prototype cyborg. Guess he's human, after all.

Cheers to Detroit for not letting him follow in the footsteps of Ray Bourque and Larry Robinson (who was still playing when Lidstrom started), playing out his career for some random team.

Some random team? Bourque went to Colorado to win the Stanley Cup. And oh by the way, he did.

OK, I suppose 'random' was the wrong word in his case. But I was saying cheers to Detroit. Random or not, it was still garbage that Bourque thought he had to ditch town and retire in a different sweater to have a chance to win.

Detroit good. Boston no good.

Back in those days, he really did have to leave to win a championship. It wasn't until after the lockout that Bruins ownership started shelling out the cash. Hell, they took Bourque to arbitration and "...Harry Sinden told an arbiter in front of Ray Bourque that he’s only a defenseman and doesn’t put fans in the seats." Yeah, he had to go elsewhere to win a title.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

We're saying the same thing, you know.

I'm not saying Bourque is a terrible person for leaving. I'm saying that the Bruins were a terrible organization. Unlike Detroit. Which is not a terrible organization. As evidenced by Lidstrom's career.

moving on . . . :)

Correct. :)

And I'm not as down on Detroit's future as most appear to be. They have over $20M to spend so they have some room to get better as long as they're smart about it.

The cap room is the only reason I haven't echoed Hammer's sentiment. Holland was smart to hang onto his extra cash last summer instead of blowing money in that terrible FA market. That, plus despite our low draft picks, our prospect pool at forward is still in the Top 15 with Pulkkinen, Jurco, Nyquist, Jarnkrok, and Sheahan. Defense...maybe not so much. Over the next few years, I could see us dangling some forwards as trade bait to shore up the D.

Also, it sounds like they may let Jiri Hudler walk, which I am all for. No way is he worth the $4+ mil/yr he is rumored to be asking for.

Reports are that Tim Thomas will take a "sabbatical" next season. Whatever he decides, once the Bruins sign Rask he becomes expendable. That gives the Bruins plenty of cash to sign any UFA they want. They may not snag Parise, only because they have a salary structure and don't want a contract bigger than Chara's $6.9M.

On that front, I just noticed capgeek.com from $64M to $70.3M in the last few hours. It was still 64 when I checked the Detroit cap situation earlier - now the Wings have almost 27M to spend.

70.3 is what the cap would be under the current CBA, with player's getting 57% of revenue. The speculation is that the owners will try to bargain the players down to around 50% of revenue, which is what the NFL and NBA players got. 50% would leave the salary cap at roughly the $64 million it was at this past year.

The NHL informed the league's GMs to plan for a $70.3 cap, but who knows if teams will actually spend that "extra" money just in case.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

You can go ahead and take Backstrom's ship anchor contract.

Phoenix might be interested. They're almost $20M below the salary floor and already have 17 players under contract.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Isn't the salary floor just the minimum needed to get a slice of the revenue sharing pie?

They could operate below it, but likely won't.

Means one of two things.

Boston's been shopping Thomas to teams he doesn't want to go to and he's trying to kill that talk.

The players know there's a lengthy lockout that they plan to dig in for.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Based on Bradley-Terry rankings (i.e., KRACH) found in the spreadsheet burgie12 gave me (but also here), the updated (after mm/dd) probabilities for each possible outcome of the Stanley Cup Final are:

Code:
-------------
| Game| % |
|-----------|
| NJD |48.8%|
|-----|-----|
| LAK |51.2%|
-------------
----------------
| Outcome| % |
|--------------|
|NJD in 7|14.9%|
|--------|-----|
|NJD in 6|11.6%|
|--------|-----|
|NJD in 5|5.66%|
|--------|-----|
|LAK in 4|13.4%|
|--------|-----|
|LAK in 5|19.7%|
|--------|-----|
|LAK in 6|19.2%|
|--------|-----|
|LAK in 7|15.6%|
|==============|
| NJD|32.1%|
|--------|-----|
| LAK|67.9%|
----------------
Game: Probability of winning each game

Most likely: LAK in 5

As always, KRACH is not a perfect predictive system. In fact, it's not predictive at all; it's retrodictive. Home-ice advantage, momentum, and the like can not be accounted for reliably, so they are ignored.

Remarks: Given how close each game in this series should be, the team most likely to win will always be the one in the lead (or the Kings if it's tied).

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

In news that will shock the state of Minnesota, Marion Gaborik will be out 6 months with rotator cuff surgery.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Dear Carolina and Phoenix:

Need help getting to the salary floor? How about a goalie who will count $5M towards the cap but you'll never have to pay him a dime. If interested, please contact Peter.Chiarelli@bostonbruins.com

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

The trolls are already feeding on the Thomas sabbatical saying he wants to be out of the country if Obama gets re-elected.

(Please keep in mind I'm not taking a side. I'm just pointing out something.)
