Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Tim Thomas just posted on FB that he will sit out the 2012-13 season to focus on the 3 G's. He also worked in a paid endorsement for two fitness machines. Hey, he's gotta feed his family somehow...

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Based on Bradley-Terry rankings (i.e., KRACH) found in the spreadsheet burgie12 gave me (but also here), the updated (after 6/2) probabilities for each possible outcome of the Stanley Cup Final are:

Code:
-------------
| Game| % |
|-----------|
| NJD |47.7%|
|-----|-----|
| LAK |52.3%|
-------------
----------------
| Outcome| % |
|--------------|
|NJD in 7|10.8%|
|--------|-----|
|NJD in 6|5.19%|
|--------|-----|
|LAK in 4|27.3%|
|--------|-----|
|LAK in 5|26.1%|
|--------|-----|
|LAK in 6|18.7%|
|--------|-----|
|LAK in 7|11.9%|
|==============|
| NJD|16.0%|
|--------|-----|
| LAK|84.0%|
----------------
Game: Probability of winning each game

Most likely: LAK in 4

As always, KRACH is not a perfect predictive system. In fact, it's not predictive at all; it's retrodictive. Home-ice advantage, momentum, and the like can not be accounted for reliably, so they are ignored.

Remarks: The most likely outcome now has the Kings going 16-2 through the playoffs (including an amazing 10-0 on the road), which is pretty ridiculous.

Let the trolling begin. Best wise remark wins. :D

I find it amusing that he's sitting out because of 'faith, family and friends' yet still wants to be on the Olympic team in 2014. I guess by then he'll have his fill of faith, family and friends...

Can you imagine what his family and friends must be like? I wouldn't want to spend more than a year with them either.

I think he figures by then he will have played out his crazy and controversial act so there is no use in continuing the charade any more. Maybe his endorsement deals will be up then too? Or maybe he will be looking for new ones for the Olympics?

I don't get the ripping on Thomas. I like the guy much more now. If he wants to spend more time with his family, he's earned that.

I don't have an issue with him doing that. If he was 28 and not 38, it would be worse. The only issue is how it screws the Bruins over with his salary still hitting the cap. But that would happen even if he retired, right? I think that's what I heard.

You don't get da ripping on Thomas? Why not, is you brain dead or someting? Cuz if you is I apologize, mais if you not, pull you head out evury now then to get the breath, eh.

2009-10 $6,000,000
2010-11 $6,000,000
2011-12 $5,000,000
2012-13 $3,000,000
KNOWN CLAUSES: NMC/NTC (cannot be traded or assigned to minors before July 1, 2012)

It amazing ow importante you friend family get when you pay getting cut in half et suddenement you can be traded. Mon Dieu what a typical Teabag acehole.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Tim Thomas is bat **** crazy. Not that there is anything wrong with that...

I had a feeling something was up when he uprooted his family half-way through the hockey season and moved them to Colorado.

I wonder how big his arsenal will be by this time next year.

Tuukka Time!

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

I still see no problem whatsoever. He thinks that spending time with his family is more important than $3,000,000, so he is giving up the 3 mil to spend time with his family. This is his decision.

The problem is that his team is still on the hook for five Million dollars (the cap hit) due to his age. He didn't discuss a sabbatical with the management; He just went and said he wasn't going to play the final year of his contract.

To explain it a little better, it would be like one of your parts suppliers telling you "Our contract expires next year, but I'm not going to ship you any more parts starting now. Cool with that?" And then being told by the bean counters that you can't allocate the suddenly available money to a new supplier because the yearly corporate budget is already submitted and that old suppliers contract counts against your department spending until it expires.

I see that as more of a problem with NHL rules regarding salaries and contracts. I don't know enough about the actual rules to have an idea of how to fix it, but if there are no reprecussions in there for what Thomas is doing, then he can go ahead and do it, as far as I care.

As far as it being a "contract", that is only as good as the framework/situation in which it was signed. Until last summer, no NFL contracts were guaranteed, teams were free to break contracts and cut players. That gap was plugged.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

they need some kind of PUP or other clause that allows teams to address off-ice issues by subtracting from cap with a control to avoid abuse. this is such a rare event that the NHL should be able to address it fairly without creating any kind of cottage industry

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

I got an easy fix. But I know the players won't accept it.

You want to leave early on a contract? Forfeiture of escrow funds earned during that contract.
