Promotion and relegation... it could work?
Only if it was between Parent/Affiliate clubs, unlike European soccer.

Which, by the way, the Chicago Wolves might have been decent in the NHL while the Atlanta Thrashers would have been mired in the AHL.

You only say that because you wanted to see D-bag Oystrick stick in the NHL. ;) :p

:D He made it to the N with the Thrashers. :p

When I first moved down here to Chicagoland, there were times where I think the Wolves would have played better NHL hockey than the Blackhawks...

Red Wings and Lidstrom having some kind of announcement tomorrow.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

It makes too much sense. They've never done a presser in the past to announce his re-signings. I figured this was the case before I started reading Twitter. Holland's comments about Lidstrom earning the right to make his announcement was a dead giveaway.

We're done contending for a while.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Per Mr. Yerdon, this is indeed the end for Lidstrom.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

$10 on the Kings to win the series 4-1. 9/2 odds, not bad at all.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Yep, I'm secretly hoping that it's a farewell tour, but my mind is saying thanks for the career.

That said, if this is a retirement presser, Ryan Suter will look excellent in a winged wheel next season.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

It'll be interesting to see if Holland is willing/has to really whip out the checkbook for Suter. He's been able to draw people to Detroit on the organizational strengths and being a perpetual cup contender since he took over in 1998, getting reasonable deals or even discounts.

If he offers say, $7 million and half a dozen other teams do the same, I'd bet that one or two of the other teams will be closer to a Cup right now than Detroit, which will be something new. He may have to overpay. Assuming the rumors about Stuart's wife demanding he move back to California are true, the second best D-man on Detroit's roster is Ericsson. That's not a cup contender.

I say that's fair, but some GMs may hold back due to the impending lockout.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

In the AHL, Toronto is going to face Norfolk for the Calder Cup. No word on whether the Marlies will take the place of the Leafs for the 2012-13 season. :D
We can only hope!

Devils in six, Brodeur finally wins the Smythe.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Part II: Boogalooing all the way to the Cup

Lidstrom made $6.2 mil this year, so all of that plus some additional cap space can be thrown at an UFA. There's no replacing Lidstrom, but the gap can be somewhat filled with a quality free agent acquisition.

Replacing Stuart (if necessary) for a reasonable price will be the trickier part. I'm hoping that we won't re-sign overpaid Kyle Quincey, but since we gave up a 1st rd. pick to get him, and I doubt Holland wants to raze the entire defensive unit in one offseason, I suspect he's coming back. I'm also thinking Brendan Smith is ready for the big club, but we all know about Holland's policy of "over-ripening" players in the minors.

That Ericsson contract still kills me. We'd have a couple more million to play with if he was being paid according to his actual, on-ice performance.

Del Zotto is someone I fear the Wings would take a run at. He's a solid player.
