NFL '24-25- lots of potential, any reality?

Didn’t see any of the game, but we scored more than i thought, but, alas, it looks like all of the defensive injuries were a big problem.

You never really thought the Lions were going to come back and win the game, but they kept it annoyingly close enough to not turn the game off. The defensive line is a serious problem. Allen had all the time in the world to make a play, and he did nearly every time. I don't know how the Lions beat an offensively competent team. Our offense is great, but they can't be expected to score a TD every drive.

They're hitting a wall. McNeill, Davis and Montgomery now done for the season. I'll consider it a victory to win a playoff game with this defense.

Watched the second quarter of the Atl/Lv game last night, and finally got to see a team more pathetic(patheticer?)than the Patriots. Thy name is Raiders.

Very obscure play last night- the chargers got a fair catch free kick at the end of the first half. Last one of those was in 1976.

Last successful one. Seems like there’s usually an attempted one every two or three years.

Edit: just saw there were nine attempted until last night, so every 9ish years then. I’ve personally seen two attempted.

Theres a wiki article on it. I saw the Packers one in 09 and the London one in 19. There were 16 years between attempts from 1989 to 2005. 68-71 was a busy time for fair catch free kick enthusiasts.

What determines success vs failure for those kicks? I’ve never seen one attempted, only heard of them, much like the punt-pass from long ago.

ETA: Never mind. Your edit came through after I wrote my reply.

Like why are they missed so much? They’re typically longer distance because it’s the end of the half so teams aren’t worried about missing and giving the other team field position. If it misses it becomes a touchback or essentially a kick off. Last night’s was actually the shortest attempted since the last successful one. All but one were 60+ and two were 70+.

Plus while it is a free kick, it still has to be held so they aren’t kicking off a tee. Having a holder takes a little off the distance. Third I’m guessing it gets to a mental game of knowing they HAVE to boot it to get full distance but now they’re aiming for the goalposts as well when on a normal free kick they have a general direction but don’t necessarily need to get it to cross ten feet up between two posts.

And now your edit came after my reply. Although my edit is now gone from my original post because TECHNOLOGY.

You are correct good sir. Wednesday it is.

Which is why it's the same four teams playing today. No way they were going to schedule teams with just two days rest (I doubt the players union would allow it). They had to have three (like going from Sunday to Thursday). Ergo, whoever played on Saturday were going to play on Wednesday.
